This is the changelog for version 8 according to their site:

    8.0.0.0

    Initial release

New feature: Copy open files using Volume Shadow Copy (32-bit Windows only)

    New feature: Copy long filenames

New feature: Support for Unicode characters
Doesn't look like a must have upgrade if your current version is working for you.
Yeah I guess it's not really worth it, I dont seem me needing those features.

    Don't do it

I've used Second Copy since 2003. I made a mistake of upgrading to 8. At some point I noticed Second Copy 8 taking unusually long time to sync my two computers. Turns out it was wiping out my Documents folder on the Destination computer. On the subsequent sync it would've wiped out the Source. I contacted the company. Remarkably they knew that this could happen starting with a Destination folder if you mount it a mapped drive (the usual way). But my case turned out to be different. For some reason SC8 thinks my Source folder is empty, even though it's not and proceeds to make the Destination empty. Support at Second Copy said "That is very strange. Please send us the "profiles.dat" and "log.rtf" files for analysis." I did. Have not heard back from them for more than a week. Pinged them a few days ago. Nothing. I think they are having a major problem. I went back to Second Copy 7 and am carefully previewing what it does. Hope this was Second Copy 8 "feature". I'm looking into other applications.

I have used Second Copy for about as long as you have with no regrets or issues.

Thanks for the clue on problems with SC 8.

I am using 7.1.0.3 and have been for several years. No malfunctions on Vista, Win 7 32 bit , or Win 7 64 bit.

The nearest thing I have to a problem is that it will very very rarely refuse to copy or delete a certain file. This occurs ONLY when the path to the file in question is extremely long---I think beyond 255 characters. I use "exact copy" in all cases.

    Ignat,
In one of SC 8 e-mails I saw something about them fixing long file names. But that's not worth the other problems. By the way, a day after I posted to the forum I got an email from them asking which operating system I'm using. Kind of lame after a week of silence.
