Hi,
I've been using Microsoft Security Essentials for months now and have had no issues. The problem with most 'free' antivirus is that you're not 100% protected but with MSE you are

Microsoft Security Essentials without a tinge of doubt. Just make sure you are using a Genuine copy of Windows and it is the best free AV available. MSE is detecting virus and malware which even paid versions of other software are not able to detect for me. I regularly update the virus and spyware definitions and that might have helped.
Another very strong vote for Microsoft Security Essentials. This is the ONLY av I recommend. It's free, excellent, auto-updating, small footprint, non-intrusive, doesn't drag your computer performance.

Plus I'd like to recommend a cloud antivirus like Threatfire. along with Avast/MSE, if you're on the net for long durations.

Another vote for MSE. It's light weight, runs in the background without bogging things down, and it won the prestigious VB100 award last month.
