Google docs or Open Office are my recommendations. There both free.

Google docs is online and Open Office is software

There is no adequate replacement for MS Word, in my opinion.

That said, I recommend using WordPad if you don't have MS Word.

WorPad has been improved and expanded greatly over previous versions thereof.

If you haven't taken a look at the WordPad included with Win 7, I recommend such. You will be amazed. You will think you've got Word installed.

I always suggest this approach to the poor, starving student who can not even afford a schools "MS Office" for students offering.
