Portable Applications Advantage/Disadvantages?

How my eyes open for the first time, I didn't realize the numerous of possibilities out there for portable apps.

I wanted to open a thread about the advantages or disadvantages of portable application because until recently had no clue what they were.

Thought it only had to do with crack programs, didn't realize there were no many options and are LEGAL.

What are some of the best portable application?

I've tried a few portables and found it to be a hit and miss affair. Most leave traces, which may or may not
be a concern. My biggest Grrrr with portables was with SuperAntiSpyware -- which installed entries in my
startup. After removing the app I noticed errors in Event Viewer ... to remedy that, I needed to manually edit
the Registry.

Not sure if this is what you had in mind, but I've got NirSoft on a flash drive for those "just in case" moments. Only caveat is to have your AV and/or firewall allow the download. Sometimes they block password recovery tools.

NirSoft - freeware utilities: password recovery, system utilities, desktop utilities

I have a bunch of small utilities on my system under C:\Utils. A nice side-effect of portable is if I do a Custom Install of Windows, it gathers up the stuff under Program Files, and Windows and sticks it in Windows.old folder. But all my apps in C:\Utils still work. I don't have to download or configure again. Just make shortcuts for the ones that use shortcuts. For the command line utilities, c:\utils is still in the path. They work right away.

For the ones that auto start on logon, I use WinPatrol to add them back in.
