check out rainlendar for a diary/calendar type program that sits on your desktop a bit like a gadget.
you can enter events, colour-code certain days, set up reminders and alarms, and more.
or the new windows live mail 2011 comes with a simple calendar and to-do list type thingy that integrates with a hotmail/live account. (and is also a very good email client too!)
wlm 2011 can also send you useful email reminders.
hope that helps.
