Windows 7: Visual SourceSafe and Win7

Visual SourceSafe and Win7

Attempting to install Visual Source Safe (version 6.whatever, from about 2001) on Windows 7 gives the "This program has known compatibility issues".

Does anyone know if the compatibility issues are serious, is it safe to use with restrictions, are there other alternatives, etc.? I've got some code in VSS databases that I would like to be able at least get out into my Windows 7 files, and preferably, be able to continue to check in/out.

If it's not safe to use, are there other solutions for version control (i.e., that don't cost an arm and a leg. I can't run a Team Foundation Server. I do have an MSDN subscription, if that helps.)

Thanks.
