I use VLC - I'm quite comfy with it since I've used it for years on Linux and have always loathed WMP on Windows.

    YMMV

I've used RealPlayer for years and am very happy with it. It's free, and as a huge bonus, it comes with a "Download This Video" link that allows you to download pretty much any music video, movie, or other video or audio track from the web. Very user friendly, and I also like the Playlist feature.

VLC is the best, hands down. It may not look snazzy and new-age but it will play any file type you can throw its way. (and play it correctly.)

    media player classic
    splayer
    vlc
    kmplayer

in no particular order - none of these need you to install codec packs - they'll play almost anything 'out of the box'.

And another vote for VLC. It plays mkv's flawlessly whereas WMP plays them but far from flawless.
