My laptop won't boot and the start up repair it recommends fails

Hey, I'm posting this from my older computer but heres the problem

My laptop can't load windows. After work today, I opened it up and logged in, it was in standby before i opened it. Soon AVG popped up and told me it needed to restart to finish an update. Of course, i allowed this. Then as it was booting it went to a black screen and told me i could either start windows normally or launch start up repair, which was recommended. Apparently it couldn't start. So i launched start up repair, it restored my computer to an earlier state before booting it normally. AVG popped up again, assuming the problems prevented updating, i decided to allow it again. The same thing happened entirely. On the next reboot, the start up repair failed. And It won't let me system repair. It can't boot. Help?
