USB/SD use in processing video?

OK, so I've got pinnacle studio 12 that I have used to process video on my desktop. I'd like to uninstall it from there and install it on my laptop...but I've only got one hard drive in the laptop. On the desktop I read from one drive, write to another.

Would it be feasible/realistic to read from either an SD card (class 10) or USB flash drive and write to the laptop hard drive (only thinking this way because reading from flash should be faster than writing to it).

Or would I be better off just reading/writing to the one drive?

Laptop has a T4400 processor and 4gb RAM (Windows 7 x64).
