Windows 7: Error 1722 (and Paint.net Error 1603) Can't Uninstall/Update Paint.net

Error 1722 (and Paint.net Error 1603) Can't Uninstall/Update Paint.net

Hi all,

I'm sure glad there are forums out there because I'm at a loss on this thus far.

Paint.net has an update available to 3.5.6 from 3.5.5. When I go to install the new version part of that process is uninstalling the old version. It seems to error out at this point and gives me the error 1603, however, through research I've found a way to provide more specific details by looking at the PdnMsiInstall file at it says...

I've tried several things that Paint.net forums suggests as well as google my butt off, but nothing seems to work.

I have tried
  • disabling my anti-virus and firewall
  • repairing .net framework
  • uninstalling and reinstalling .net framework 4 client profile
  • repairing paint.net (errors out)
  • Making sure the 'Windows Modulur Installer' is set to manual, not disabled
  • re-registering msi installer
  • maybe some others...

Also I have found this... fatal installation error 1603 Fix - Paint.NET Forum

But I'm timid to try it out... typical instructions quoted here...

click check names then hit ok

now under groups or user names select trusted installer and check all the permissions hit ok the hit ok again
RESTART YOUR COMPUTER

5.now type in services.msc in search or run open it and find TrustedInstaller right cllick it and go to properties and set the start up type to manual hit apply then ok now on the left side it has a discription click on start the service

Instead of getting so deep, 1st thing I'd try is uninstalling paint.net using the free Revo Uninstaller

Revo

Then, if it is successful, try to install the new version.

If no luck, try download this small program (no install necessary) and boot into safe mode, and run the installer from safe mode

Safe MSI

This small program just enables you to easily start the windows installer in safe mode. In safe mode, just the bare basics are loaded, and anything that is interfering with the uninstall might be disabled.

Try Revo to uninstall, then new version install 1st though, as it appears to be the uninstall that is thwarting you. A Guy

Thank you for your response. I'm sorry I didn't include in the original post that for some reason Revo does not see Paint.net. It doesn't show up. ??? It does in fact show up in add/remove, but not there...

I tried Safe MSI in safe mode, but when I went to uninstall Paint.net after running Safe MSI, I got the same error. Windows installer could not finish (something or other).

What now?

Update. I have now also tried the MSI Cleanup Utility and SFC /SCANNOW. Neither worked...

Are you right clicking the installer, and choosing Run as administrator? This may well be a Windows Installer problem, rather than a paint.net issue. A Guy
