I'm interested as to how you actually were able to move the "locked data". Always wanted to know what that is and why it needs to be "locked" to a certain part of the disk and which programs do that?
    .
My understanding is some system data is locked when Windows is running because the OS can't deal with the impact of changing it's location. For instance when changes are made to the page file size or location Windows says the changes will not take effect until the system is restarted. PerfectDisk (and a number of other defraggers such as Diskeeper) have a boot-time defrag option that moves system files before the GUI is loaded (it runs in a text screen like chkdsk.exe). This makes it possible to defrag the page file, the MFT and other "meta data". Sometimes this is necessary, as when I needed to shrink my partition.

    Hi Sven

Hmm...I wonder if the system does recognize it as SSD, but doesn't grey out that option for some reason. I wonder if you clicked it, if it would actually do a defrag or tell you it can't do that for this device. Of course the problem is,if it actually started to defrag it would you be able to stop it quick enough...I can't say that I'd tell you to try it..
I haven't delved too deep into the defrag scheduler, I wonder if you can turn it off for selected drives, say your "F:" drive, if that's what your SSD is recognized as.

Edit - Sven, it seems that SSD recognition is in the works for a future W7 update

I guess with the popularity of SSD drives on the rise, they had to do something like this pretty soon, I wonder if it will be in the final RTM or maybe even a sooner leak build
Thank you very much for this info. In "time schedule" for defrag there is a button that lets you select the discs you wants to be part of defragging. In earlier builds all my drives was there including my SSD, but from 7264 (allmost just installed) SSD-drive is NOT in this list, but it still shows op in main window, and I can still manually defragment it (of course I don't), so some improvement has been done.

BTW: What is TRIM, and where can I read more about it?

    +rep for your answer :)

Yes Victek, that's the case from my understanding too.

@Charles..LOL! Since we never really know what kind of system each one is applying to the file system, we'll never really know if what it did actually was of any use.
One thing I know is that all contiguous free space isn't really the "ultimate" for performance. Having things in different spaces on the disk can reduce seek times, but it's such a complicated process nowadays.

    Thanx Sven!
I'm not sure exactly what TRIM is myself, I have to do some reading on it I guess. So, I guess we both need to Google that. Anandtech is a web site well known for their expertise in hardware tech, maybe start there...AnandTech: your source for hardware analysis and news

I think victec is right - all of my unmovable files simply relate to the fact that I continued using my system - Even I recommended in this thread that jkdefrag (and obviously others) can be set to do a boot time defrag.

Still doesn't answer how he moved his locked files.

Defraggler is best for Windows 7 as its free and take very less resource !

But I personally prefer to use paid one, that is Diskeeper Pro 2009 !

Sorry if this wasn't clear in my first post. Basically, files that are locked while the Windows GUI is running are not locked while Windows is booting, so during a boot-time defrag PerfectDisk (and others such as Diskeeper) can move them. It's as simple as that. If you want to see this in action just install PerfectDisk which is fully functional trial-ware for thirty days.

Contig with powerdefrag GUI. COntig was sysinternals, now owned by MS.
Download Power Defragmenter 3.0 - This software will take the defragmentation process to a whole new level - Softpedia

free, works great, and will move your system files in the right place for a disk shrink

I downloaded and tried "MyDefrag" (the latest version of JKDefrag). Nice GUI but I am trying to run it from command prompt (via a batch file). If I call a script, then all it dos is it opens that script. If I call the MyDefrag.exe, then it opens the GUI and I have to click on the START button. Their answers on their help forum are quite confusing. Anybody could help me with this? (Just a line in a batch file specifying 'fast', slow', and the drives, etc.) that I could invoke from the Task Scheduler (and include other command, e.g. activate the sleep mode, etc...). Thank you, Laci.

For MyDefrag I've only used the GUI that comes with it and let it add the schedules for me.
