Camtasia Studio works fine!

They have a codec called TSSC (TechSmith Screen Capture) works pretty good

TechSmith | Camtasia Screen Recorder Software, Home

TSSC is a downloadable codec that works along with Camtasia Studio and it's available on the same website

TechSmith Products: Snagit Screen Capture, Camtasia Studio Screen Recorder, Morae Usability Software from TechSmith

Microsoft Expression Encoder 4 is awsome. I have never seen any better quality - and I have tried many, also paid programs. The downside is the high price ($199). But the free version lets you record 10 minutes with each run. Try it out. But you better have a system with muscle because the encoding is long. I use it on a laptop with i7 and 1GB GPU. That works fine. But on my lesser desktop, it takes a while to encode the recording output which is in an interim file format that only WMP can deal with.

A cheaper solution with reasonable quality is this one. They have a trial that you can try also.

BTW:I tried Camtasia studio too. But that is even more expensive ($299) and not as good as Expression Encoder.

Anyone use the free CamStudio? It's a SourceForge project released under the GPL.

I tried that a while ago. The quality was pretty dismal. The acid test is text on the screen - e.g. a Wikipedia website. Try that and you will see.

With action movies (as a friend once said: car chases and explosions), the problem is less apparent.

Thanks, I'll try that. I did use it to record opening some folders in Windows Explorer and it looked pretty good.

When you tried it, did you also install the latest video codec they provide?

To tell you the thruth, I do not remember the details. It was at least a year ago that I tried it. But if you find it to be better these days, your report would be interesting - especially if you have a chance to compare it with the Microsoft Expression Recorder 4.

I've used it before, but in order to get sufficient quality the file size is huge. At work, I use WebEx (or it might be GoToMeeting), and it does a really solid job. I've been pretty happy with the output. I use it for video tutorials at work for setting things up.

If you have a look at my tutorial, Windows Search - Configure and Use, I used Adobe Captivate for the Flash sequences.

Although I must point out that it crashed alot on me, even with the latest patches, and I'm not all too happy with the quality of the output in some places.

I too have been looking for alternatives...
