    Diagnostic Software

    Hello all!

Ever since I got my new laptop back in August 2010, I have been testing out various diagnostic programs such as CCleaner, Advanced Systemcare Pro, etc. I did like some of them so I decided to keep them. The only thing that worries me is perhaps I am damaging my computer by cleaning it daily. That is the registry, junk files and all that stuff. Below is the list of diagnostic software that I have installed...

    -CCleaner
    -WinUtilities
    -nCleaner
    -Comodo System Cleaner
    -Advanced SystemCare Pro
    -Ace Utilities Pro
    -tempCleaner

I have recently been looking at different places to see if any of the software is potentially harmful, not malware speaking. I do realize that cleaning the registry is kind of a risky thing, but some of the software does registry backups just in case something goes wrong. So now to the point. I would like to know if any of the software that I am using should be removed, so I can prevent any damage to my system. I would also appreciate any other suggestions for any approved software that would boost my PC's performance. Thanks guys.

    Hello there.

Windows 7 doesn't need all of those cleaners and optimizer because Windows 7 is already optimized, i'd suggest uninstall every single one and leave CCleaner which is a "state-of-the-art" cleaner (as Gregrocker would say)

Those registry cleaners and optimizers do more harm than fixes, so if i were you, i'd stay away from them because they could lead to a bunch of problems, from a single application error, to a BSOD, to a full reinstallation of windows.. and if you don't have a backup of your important data, that would mean losing it. and nobody wants that

Always remember to backup your registry in case something goes wrong. There's no need to "Boost" the performance in Windows 7 because it comes already boosted, believe me.

That's what most members here on the forums will tell you.

I agree with punkster. I use Ccleaner but not the registry part. I leave the registry alone. I would not recommend the rest of you listed program and with Windows 7 as punkster has posted. You will find out that Windows 7 is not like the older system that one would have to tinker with. One thumbs up for tinker.

I'm another one who believes in keeping it simple. The built in 7 tools like check disk and even the defragmenter should suffice. I will say that the CCleaner registry tool is a lot less agressive than many others out there. For example, once CCleaner is installed, delete the setup file and then run the registry cleaner. You should see a notice that the CCleaner setup.exe file cannot be found along with a recommendation to delete it from the registry. Since you know you just deleted the setup file, why not use CCleaner to clean up the registry? This would be a safe removal IMO.

Actually i find the CCleaner registry cleaner (awful redundancy here xD) to be really good. i mean, it doesnt mess with weird registry entries and stuff.

But of course this doesn't mean anything to the average "click, next, next, next, finish, close" type of users who don't read what they're about to do or delete or whatever. You have to really know what you're doing when it comes to Registry Cleaners, because deleting something that you shouldn't be deleting, could lead you into some trouble.

So i'd say, don't use the registry cleaner from CCleaner unless you know what you're doing, otherwise you'll be regretting it when you have an unrecoverable issue

    Better safe than sorry

Just remember that a bunch of registry unused entries don't hurt. One needed item removed can make a door stop of your computer. For those that have the proper knowledge (I'm not one of those people) a registry cleaner could be used. In my terms. A operating systems registry is like a index of a book. If you fool around with the index you might not be able to read all the chapters or you might not be able to even open the book, (100% lock down).
