Thank you, Francis. My bad ... didn't realize you were referring to the beta.

Sorry if I confused you. I forgot to mention that Java 7 is still pre-release/beta software. Edited my post in the previous page.

My last resort would be downloading the pre-release JRE 7.
I do not make any conscious effort to update. Whenever it says an update is available, I allow it to update. I do not remember when it happened last. But here is what my system says. I am not bluffing .

I have Java 6 Update 24 installed on 5 machines with Windows 7 SP1 (various versions) with no issues.

I recommend getting it from here.

Awhile back? I checked my system and it shows update 24 was installed on 27 May 2010. When did you try to update to 24? Is it after SP1?

I am just trying to decipher whether updating it to 24 after autoupdate to SP1 is causing this anamoly.

Don't know where you get May 27 2010 from.

Java 6 update 24 only came out 3 weeks ago.

New Java version available - 6 update 24 Released

And I had a problem with it installing on a my system with an standalone SP1 already installed on it and couldn't get Java 24 to install. Once I clean installed Win 7 with an SP1 integrated ISO, it installed without problems after that.

So it still works with having SP1 apparently. Otherwise, I wouldn't have been able to install it on the SP1 integrated ISO.

Follow these instructions to update Java ...
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6.
  • Scroll down to where it says "Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6u24 allows end-users to run Java applications".
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • The page will refresh.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation with or without Multi-language and save to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u24-windows-i586-p.exe to install the newest version.

Those are just generic remove/install options from Programs and Features. Pretty basic.

But there's something screwy with the Java 24, as some like me had it where 24 refused to install no matter what after Update 23 was uninstalled from P&F.

Thanks to those who helped, but I did rollback my system for how many times just because of failed attempts to install Java 6 Standard Edition Update 24. Java 7 SE (Early Access Release) was able to install without any problem.

The 'offline' installation (JRE) 6u24 installed on my computer with absolutely no problems

BTW ... why would you want Java updater running at startup and in the background? Just scan with Secunia PSI
http://secunia.com/vulnerability_scanning/personal/ for software vulnerability. This app should also be manually started when you need it.

This thread having been marked as solved, any further discussions may only be academic in nature.

Since my system shows the update 24 install date as 27 May 2010, I was now curious to know how it could be.

I ran System Information for Windows by Gabriel Topala and this is what I see.

Java 6 Update 24 Doesn't Install-java6-20to24.jpg

1. The install date is still 27 May 2010

2. The last write time is given as 02 Feb 2011.

3. The install source is given as jre1.6.0_20

In the light of this, I presume that update 20 was installed on 27 May 2010 and further updates were only considered as patches to that. May be update 24 was written on 02 Feb 2011.

Shows how an old-timer I am. Its all still Sun Micro and not Oracle .
