Making XP .pif files work in desktop?

With my XP-driven Toshiba Satelite I was able to program the executable command for my DOS program in a .pif and it would run in a miniature box. With Windows 7 this feature does not appear in the icon properties on the desktop. How can I run my old but very important DOS program through a basic command? Thank you.
