This is an old thread, but since you brought it back up. I agree, it will only decrease the life of the SSD (it shouldn't be major). Trim will take care of the realotting by itself. There is a tool for trimming free space manually, but it too shouldn't be needed.

I agree on the free-disk space option, but remember that when asked, the user said he had sensitive documents (presumably deleted) that he didn't want to be recoverable:

Perhaps he was wanting to sell the SSD at some point in the future???

I just found all this seemingly cool software for SSD's @ FileGuru.Com Your One Stop Shop For Great Software Downloads. I mean, like I said, I'm not hip to this stuff, that's why I come here and talk to people. But if the SSD software on that site does what it says it does, then cool. I don't see how you can do a SSD version of a "wipe free space" but they got stuff there that says it does it, and much more. If site and software sucks, my bad... Haven't tried yet.
