AIM 'not responding' for a min after sent IM?

Unsure where this goes... feel free to move it in a better place :0

I have had such trouble with this computer and set up. Windows 7...I'm not quite sure I like it. Either way, it came with this Dell. We've finally got internet working on it, and it's keeping connected (it took me forever. The only way I can get the net to pick up more than 3 bars is to use a repeater, which we purchased: it is a Hawking Hwren1 300 N extender). Firefox is running smoothly, no hangups. But...

I downloaded AIM (I use this program A LOT) and installed it, all good, signed in... Go to IM someone and it freezes, the screen goes pale/white and it says 'not responding' for 1-2 minutes. Then my IM will go through. Does the same thing when someone sends ME an IM.

I need AIM to work. At first I thought it was the connection speed...but Firefox = fast and reliable. So I don't think that's the issue.

edit: I can screenshot if need be as well!
edit2: I updated Adobe Flash player. (things download nicely!)...still nothing, same white-ish screen saying 'not responding'. Hm.
edit3: I ran the troubleshooter, but to no avail... I'm trying an older version of AIM atm.
edit4: tried an older version of AIM (5.3? I think)...and it does the same thing.
It's 5 in the morning. I give up

Help? Thank you!
