Hi! grandmeme, welcome to 7F :)

Try this: Download and run the Norton Removal Tool to uninstall your Norton product | Norton Support
You will have to pick what norton product you have.
Click on that link, and download that tool to desktop.
Make sure all other programs are closed, then click on icon, and it should start automatically.

I'm quite certain there are still "traces" left from the original Norton installation (That one locks itself especially deep into the system) So if Anak's approach didn't solve it (that would've been my first choice as well) you could try this

    Download | The PC Decrapifier

If that still doesn't help I suggest CCleaner
Rather than the manual approach via MSconfig or digging through the registry

    Your welcome,

I could not find anything specific on what version of norton has been installed onto your machine, but since your machine was made in November 2010
(See: HP Pavilion Slimline s5704y Desktop PC Product Specifications) Open product Specifications.

You should run this: Download and run the Norton Removal Tool to remove your Norton 2006 product or later version | Norton Support

Since you do not want norton, disregard Step #1, go directly to Step #2.

Let us know how it does!

@Sledge..Thank you for the link to PCDC I had that in the back of my mind, and the suggestions to use Ccleaner are good as well!

Your welcome, glad you were able to get your problem sorted out!

And do not be so hard on yourself. The only silly question is the one that was not asked!
