You can download Virus database updates from Avast Website.
    Download avast! Antivirus Update
Those are EXE files, which you can download on your HDD and install later on your home computer.

Also, you can use the following tricks to increase protection:
Write-disabling software How To Protect USB Drive From Virus When Attached To Infected Computer
and create write-protected dummy "autorun.inf" file Protect USB Flash Drive from Virus

Tricks are originally for USB flash drives, but they should work for portable hdd too.

Another thing you can try, download:

Malwarebytes : Malwarebytes Anti-Malware is a free download that removes viruses and malware from your computer

Update the database. Do a complete scan and select the USB drive as well as all the internal drives. It may take an hour or so. I recommend clearing the recycle bin before starting the scan. If that comes up clean then you should be ok.

Also it can be a good idea to use something to protect your browser while surfing unfamiliar sites. Sandboxie is one popular program, but you can find others on download sites.

Another solution is to scan the external drive before transferring.
