    unknown publisher message with KMPlayer

Hi, I've been reading through the forum to try and find a solution to my problem - but none discovered yet. This seems close to what I am experiencing, so I'll add it here. In summary I want to use KM Player as my default media player. I wanted to change it via the process you explain above, but as in Beatriz case, KM Player is not listed in the "Programs" listing under Default Programs. So I went around another way and in explorer right clicked the avi. file I want to open, and changed the default to KM Player. Now this is a solution but not a good one, as all the other video file types are still not associated with KM Player, and it is laborious to have to go and change them one by one. So that is my first issue (but not my main one) - if there is an easy way to get ALL video file types to associate with KM Player then that would be great.

My second issue is the main one. When I now double click on an AVI file I do not immediately get KM Player opening. Instead I get a dialogue box pop up saying "User Account Control. Do you want to allow the following program from an unknown publisher to make changes to this computer?". I tried to get a screenshot, but for some reason Alt+Prt Sc doesn't work? When I click on allow - then KM Player opens. I don't want this pop-up each time - as KM Player is something I trust. So how can I tell Windows to trust it? There is an option on the UAC pop-up saying 'choose when to be notified about changes to your computer', and it gives the option to move a slider to change security settings. But I don't want to change security settings for everything - I only want KM Player to open as a trusted program. Anyway of doing that?

Thanks for any help you can give.

Hello Taranaki, and welcome to Seven Forums.

Does the pop-up look like the one in the tutorial below? If so, it will show you how to stop it.

    Hi Brink,

Thanks for the welcome and quick reply. I managed to get find a similar screen shot of my problem via google image search, and have attached it here (as I mentioned in my earlier post, for some reason print screen won't work when this error message is displayed). Naturally for my actual message the program name is KM Player and File Origin is 'Hard drive on this computer'

If I click on the "change when these notifications appear" I just get the screen with the slider, which allows me to change security system wide. As I mentioned earlier, I don't want to lower my security level, only "trust" KM Player.

As you can see there is also no option to "Always ask before opening this file" to uncheck, so I cannot use that method to fix the problem. The application file is sitting under C:/Program Files (x86) so I moved it back to C:\Users\(user-name) folder. Then when I right click on the file I get the following menu:
    unknown publisher message with KMPlayer-menu.jpg

I clicked on Properties and up popped the following screen:
    unknown publisher message with KMPlayer-kmprop.jpg

As you will note, it does not look like the screen shot from the link you provided, and does not offer the option to "Unblock". Also, later when I moved the application file back to its' original location under C:/Program Files (x86) and right clicked for properties, I got the same screen pop up.

I thought that perhaps the security tab might hold the answer, so I looked at that. Here it is:
    unknown publisher message with KMPlayer-kmsec.jpg

I could not see any solution there. So I looked at the Compatibility tab. Here it is:
    unknown publisher message with KMPlayer-kmcom.jpg

I checked "Run this program as an administrator" hoping that perhaps this would solve the problem, and also checked it for "change for all users". I moved the file back to the program files location, but the same UAC message still pops up and blocks it running automatically.

By the way, on my computer I have set up two accounts for myself - one as Administrator and one as Standard User. I did this as I read that using the Standard User account for general stuff provides more security, and that one should only run as Administrator when needed. You may see this on some of the menu shots - my Admin account is "RJ", and Standard User is "RJ Day to Day". All of the actions I have been doing, I have been using my Administrator account. Interestingly, when I work in my Standard User account, I cannot get Windows to even acknowledge that KM Player is a media player that can be used to play media files. When I try to open an avi. file, I right click and choose the "open with...", browse to the KM Player application and double click on it (or choose open), and nothing happens. It just bounces me back to the screen only giving me the option of using Windows Media Player. Not sure if this is related to the issue, but it sure would be nice to solve that problem too, otherwise I will only ever use my Admin account.

I also had another thought that perhaps I have to actually log-in under the "Administrator" named account to make the changes (even though RJ has Admin rights)? If this is the case, could you let me know how to get the log-in screen that allows me to log in as Administrator? Currently my log in screen only shows 3 accounts, being RJ, RJ Day to Day, and Guest. I can't find any option to enable me to log in with the name "Administrator".

The issue is that KMPlayer didn't digitally sign the file giving you this "unknown pubisher" issue. I wouldn't recommend lowering your security settings to bypass this message either. Instead, I would recommend to contact the publisher (Softonic) to request that they place a digital signature on the KMPlayer files to avoid this issue.

As an example, here's what a digital signature looks like for the program CCleaner by Piriform.

Well I can try that, but am not holding my breath that they will change anything. It seems unusual to me that I cannot instruct Windows to accept that I trust the application. I am the user/owner and it is me taking the risk on my personal computer. Having used the application several times already it seems that the application has already "proved" it is ok too. I guess that the only way around it is to turn UAC off.

Thanks anyway for your help. I think that UAC is a great concept - although this obviously shows that it still needs work before it can be used day to day.

Well, it's not UAC, but the program publisher at fault for not writing the program to meet Windows 7's UAC policy and requirements by simply placing a digital signature on their file so that it would be seen as a trusted publisher and not get this message.

Not all publishers are the same. So what can you do. Windows 7 is just doing what it was designed to do by letting you know that a program written by an "unknown publisher" is trying to run on your computer. There are debates on whether their should be a UAC exception list or not included in Windows 7, but it was decided to not have one to provide the highest security level as possible instead of having a potential security risk.

As you note "there are debates on whether there should be a UAC exception list...". I'm sure that this must be a hot topic somewhere. I don't know the details, but I'm sure that the process of getting a digital signature is not simple - and if it involved a cost - then for sure it will be seen as a revenue making exercise or worse.

I find it interesting that people view Apple as "control freaks", however I have switched to Windows two weeks ago after using Macbook Air for the past year, and Macbook Air only asked me the first time I ran it, if I wanted to trust KM Player. I said yes and it remembered from then after. Simple.

Ok. Well, an interesting update now. I read some forums at the KM Player site and wondered if I was using the most recent version of KM Player or not. I had originally downloaded KM Player from the softonics site. So I uninstalled my existing version (which I had downloaded from softonics a couple of days ago), and downloaded directly from the KM Player site. I installed it, and now I don't have the problem! That is, if I click on a movie file it opens right away in KM Player with no UAC warning. Also, I logged in with my Standard User account, and it works fine there too! So the solution seems to be to download directly from the programmer's site.

That's great news mate. I'm happy to hear that they had another version of the program that was digitally signed.

I checked the version numbers - and the one on the softonic website was 3.0.0.1439, while the KM Player site is 3.0.0.1440. So they are pretty close. The setup screens were different however, with softonics having a few more options for "add-ons" such as installing Ask Toolbar, Games Toolbar etc. So I'm wondering if perhaps softonics had altered the program somehow so that the digital signature was invalidated? However this isn't really important - just me wondering. I'm happy it is all working and I haven't had to turn off UAC.
