    Paint shop pro 7

    Greets!
When trying to set psp7 as default program for, say, a jpg.... when clicking to open the .jpg, or when right clicking and saying open with, I get

    C:\Windows\INSTA:~1\[D6DEO~psp7.exe
The NTVDM CPU has encountered an illegal instruction.
CS:0df8 IP:01cb OP:ff ff 00 ff 00 Choose 'Close" to terminate the application
Any idea how to remedy this? I have tried setting compatibility to xp and running as admin but it does not help.

BTW- i'm using the RC 7100

I just set my jpg's to open with Photoshop as default and it works fine.

Is this the same version as yours?

Oops, sorry I just noticed that you were talking about Paint Shop not PhotoShop.

    ver of PS?
If you mean paint shop pro, its in the first post and the title..... PSP 7

If you mean power supply its a 600 watt OCZ
    not that that matters

    Windows 7 RC 7100

Everything else seems to run ok, even an old Macromedia suite I have - I use fireworks a lot too. Although fireworks needs to shut down aero but thats ok.

Mr Grim, its important to note that I am talking about paint shop pro, not just paint shop. I can set .jpg's to open with plain old paint shop and it works fine. In fact, I just looked over the new paint shop and it has come a long ways, havent looked at that in years lol

Paint Shop Pro is an ancient 16-bit Windows 3.1 program. When you run it on a 32-bit modern Windows platform, it must run the 16-bit DOS emulator to get it to work. This is never a sure thing. Old software like this may attempt to perform what a modern 32-bit system says is illegal. It may not even be possible to ever get it to run smoothly on a modern system.

I have seen Paint Shop Pro upgrades for under $20 at Frys. I suggest either upgrading to a 32-bit PSP, or try something like GIMP for Windows GIMP - for Windows it's free.

    Bye.

I agree with the above, now might be the time to consider upgrading. I currently use Paint Shop Pro X2 which is now owned by Corel. Works create with Windows 7.

Info on my Paint Shop PRO 7.04 - note the build date of 2001. Not a windows 3.1 program by any means, its a Win 2000 era program. I also have psp 5, 8, and 9 but I prefer 7. Looking back I find that even version 4.12 was a 32 bit program, not sure if it ever was 16 or not but 5 and later are 32.

It runs great on XP and behaves as it should. There must be a way to get this one issue resolved for Win 7.
PSP 7 runs fine under Win 7 its just setting it as the associated program and opening it that way that has issues. If I wanted to use X2 I would, that is not the question.
