Paint Shop Pro is an ancient 16-bit Windows 3.1 program.

Sounds like you're talking about Paint Shop Pro 1 not 7. LOL
I have versions 7, 8 and 9 but use 8 all the time to do what I call post-processing work on photos after I've done all the heavy lifting with Adobe Lightroom. I don't use 9 because it often crashed on me and I didn't find much different about it from 8.

At some point, I'll give PSP 8 a try on Win 7 as I know someday I'll be faced with that situation. It may be necessary to move up to newer version - PSP 7 is getting a bit long in the tooth.

We hear you. The problem is that while an old version of PSP may work perfectly on XP it won't necessarily work on 7. Let's face it, XP itself is old and when built had the capability to run 3 year old programs. We're (nearly) 10 years on from there! There simply comes a time when backward compatibility becomes an albatross hanging about the neck of an OS. I run Corel PSP Photo X2. Its pretty good, bit bloated and not everything is useful or works perfectly.
You can do a few things (I don't intend to be condescending but some of these may appear rather obvious)
1: Try Windows XP Mode and run PSP in a virtual XP within 7. If you have the hardware it could work well. There do seem to be some issues with XP Mode but there are issues with everything - may be seamless for you.
2: Use Corel's PSP Photo X2
3: Work out what you actually use PSP7 to do. Then have a look around and see if there is an application which does that package of things in a way that satisfies you. It won't be PSP7 but it may actually do the job as well or better. What is required is an acceptance of change! There are a plethora of free Image Editing tools out there. some are truly excellent. If I knew what is in your PSP workflow I'm sure I could suggest some Apps to try.
4: Stick with XP. Many people are going to.

The error report when attempting to run PSP 7 is from the 16-bit emulation subsystem in 32 or 64 bit Windows. That's why I said what I said.

I did get one step closer. I found a suggestion to use a batch file. Batch file is the associated file and it is set to open psp7. Trouble is it opens the program ok but not the .jpg..... still tinkering

Excuse me if this sounds pretentious but why must you associate any files (except the obvious .pspimage ones) with PSP? Whenever I install PSP, I make sure that no file types are associated with it aside from the PSP ones.

I find that launching PSP is simply too time-consuming for me to want that to occur whenever I click on an image file.

Or does this error occur whenever you install PSP and go to set it up?

Well, you don't have to associate, it's just easier (faster) for me. When I click a .jpg I want it to open in psp. Png files open with fireworks.... that's how I work is all. One can always right click and choose 'open with' to open with another program but choosing 'open with' psp results in the same error.

I have to start the program and browse for the file to get it opened in psp. it works, just takes too long.

Have you tried killing the associaton in windows, then recreating it after a restart?

Don't know if that would help you, but it solved the same issue I was havng with Acid Pro.

Just bought new note/laptop HP pavilion dm1 (For travel purposes- have to put into hand luggage on the cheap airlines we have to use in Europe)This has win 7 .

From all the above posts it seems that upgrading to the corel psp x2 has to be the answer.

I run a website that uses a far amount of pics each week and psp 7 has just the right actions for this purpose.. having to pay extra for a more sophsticated programme than I need is an added cost. No sponsors. Same with Office have to use the 'trial ' programme ...Big mistake my other laptops work fine with xp pro.

Can I wipe out win7 and install xp pro?
