Running a software twice that worked on XP before

Hello everyone,

I know this topic is all over the net and I have been googling my brainz out but haven't found something useful yet.

As the titel says I have a software (a messenger for textbased RPGs similar to Skype, so it is nothing illegal) I want to run twice.

Before I had Windows XP with the same software and it worked like a carm with "Run as user..."
After getting a new computer which runs with Windows 7 Premium Home x64 I installed the exact same version of the software, it simply won't open another instance with the "Run as user..." command.

As it is the same software version there can't be any lock within the software to prevent multiple instances as it worked on XP before. So I assume maybe it is some setting in Windows 7 but I haven't found anything useful yet.

I hope someone has an idea how to fix this, I don't really want to go through using VM or anything like this just for a simple messenger

Thank you!

There is no setting in windows to allow or disallow multiple instances of a program. It doesn't care. You just need to find the right combination for runas (runas /?) to trick the application.

Wondering?

Have you tried a right click and open in a new window?

Thanks for the quick reply! What exactly to you mean with right combination?
I have tried it as Admin/Normal User, Admin / Admin

I just checked to make sure, but there is no such option

Didn't Check

You are correct. I didn't check into it before I made that statement. Still looking around for an answer.

I have one 3rd party program that will not open a second window (instance) after I open it and have it on the screen. But if I focus on it a second time and (first instance still running) right click and select run as admin it opens a second instance of it.

I don't have the application so its not like I can test it for you. Have you tried different user account? Like a John account and a Jane account?

Have you tried holding down the shift button and clicking the icon of the open instance that is already on the Taskbar. If the application supports multiple windows then another instance should open?

Sadly doesn't work, it already didn't support multiple windows on XP, only by running it with another user

Hello Nike, and welcome to Seven Forums.

Since it worked in XP, you might see if using compatibility mode on the program's exe file with Windows XP selected may allow it to afterwards.

Hope this helps,
Shawn

Thank you very much!
I tried this as well, sadly it won't work still.

I found something in the logs though, it doesn't seem to be able to open a SynchWindow in Windows 7 like it does in XP

first XP

Code:
06-05-11 20:32:04.015 0dec: Application initiated and Profile read
06-05-11 20:32:04.015 0dec: Found other Im instances running
06-05-11 20:32:04.015 0dec: Create IM SynchWindow
Now Windows 7

Code:
06-06-11 12:44:59.602 03b0: Application initiated and Profile read
06-06-11 12:44:59.602 03b0: Found other Im instances running
06-06-11 12:44:59.602 03b0: Found another instance of application running
06-06-11 12:44:59.602 03b0: Only single instance is allowing to run - app is exiting
