Can't install my MS Home and Student

Have recently factory defaulted the laptop and am trying to install my Microsoft Home and Student 2007 on it.

However the optical drive keeps making all these erratic mad clacking noises.

Plays any other disk but this – Home and Student one will not run.

Have tried a music one in the laptop – no problem – the disk – Home and Student in Desk 1 – no problem lists everything on it.

Anyone got any idea what this could be? There is a bundled MS Office program on would uninstalling this make any difference??

What do you mean by "factory defaulted"?

Can you boot from the problematic disc in one of your desktop machines?

Don't worry. If boot is successful, you can remove disc and shutdown your computer before you start doing the actual install.

    Karl

Factory default is a complete start from scratch - Toshiba have a > Boot with the zero key held down - it deletes all of the programs apps etc etc and just reinstalls the OS and bundled / bloatware stuff.

So in effect it's just like you have just walked out of the dealers with it - just the OS and then one starts loading apps , security, programs etc .

Now the problem is the Microsoft Home and Student 2007 software will not install from the disk I bought some time ago and have used on my machines including the one I am trying to put it back on.

The software disk I can put it in the other machines and it loads - in the laptop it just sits there with this din going on.

Put a music CD in the laptop drive where the Home and Student software won't install and it plays. So the drive is working, the disk is ok so I am at a loss as to why the drive is doing what it is withe MS Home and Student disk.

I have even taken out the bundled Office version (2010 trial) because I thought it might be conflicting with installing the 2007 version disk, cleaned the disk , ran a cleaner disk through the drive - nothing works.

Am tempted to just download a free office program like Open Office or something as this disk is not going to work.

All the same it would be nice to know why!

    First try the FixIt center.

Go to link below and type DVD in the filter box.

Microsoft Fix it Solution Center: troubleshooting software issues

Let's see what ms comes up with.

    Hiyya karl

Had a look mate and this is about the closest I could get to the problem.

Tried both methods the typing in of the cd>>>>>>> just brings up a window with refs to My Computer My Docs etc and tried the let them fix it and no go.

Think it's gonna be a tough nut to crack.

Bugger really as it was on the machine before I defaulted it.

The 2007 Office suite or the 2010 Office suite Setup program will not restart after an initial installation is interrupted

I don't know how feasible this is for you, but what I've done before since there are El Cheapo optical readers for laptops (ore maybe your local computer repair shop has one laying around you can use), just take yours out, put another one in, let windows do its thing and you are in business.

First time I had optical reader problems I happened upon a knowledgeable, helpful technician at Fry's and he simply went over to a laptop that was being sent back and swapped out mine with the one in the laptop going back. Worked like a charm, in fact, gave that laptop to a family member and it's working to this day.

Now you just might have something there karl I have an external Benq optical on the old XP and it's a USB hook up.

Might just give it a burl and see what happens.

Glad to have been of assistance.

It's nice to hear words of thanks (especially after receiving less than complimentary words from a chap who we were not able to help).
