my son would like to install again his dedicated software on his new laptop win7 x64 Home premium.
Unfortunaltelly the software is only compatible XP, and upgrade is charged....Damned this costed already 400 bucks and upgrade is not free.
therefore I am thinking to run it in vurtual XP (I still have a XP licence). But on Home premium the microsoft solution is not possible. Any other easy solution?

The actual "XP Mode" thing you can recreate that as long as you have your own XP License.

Not sure what the second link is for. Can I simply insert my installation disc XP once Virtual PC installed?

Yes you can, the second link is an update for Windows XP to allow a bit more integration. Its not mandatory unless you want the full "XP Mode" experience. The actual XP Mode Microsoft offers to Professional and Ultimate is a limited-license for Windows XP thats pretty much it.
