winserv2k8 (vista)upgrade to winserv2k8 r2 (win7) free?

I got a free legally activated download of windows server 2008 (standard) and with some tweaking, it basically runs the same as vista and would seem to be ok as a regular OS which is what i have been trying it as. FYI anybody in school with a school (.edu) email address can get it free & legal from dreamspark. I was wondering if when R2 is released, will it be free to upgrade since its activated by me? Is having a license the same thing as the activation key that i was given before i downloaded it? Below is a quote from PC Magazine.

Customers who have an Microsoft Windows Server 2008 Enterprise or Standard Administrator (EA/SA) license will receive a free upgrade to Windows Server 2008 R2. You will need to purchase a new R2 license if you don't have an SA. In addition, there will be no new CALs (client access licenses) required for customers who have already purchased Windows Server 2008 CALs or have SA licenses for their CALs.

server 2008 is the same core as vista, whereas R2 is based on the same core as win7.
