Windows 7: can't install/uninstall Nero 7

can't install/uninstall Nero 7

I'm running Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit, and system is about one month old. Bought the Ultimate because it's supposed to allow you to install older programs. Today, I tried to install my Nero 7 Ultra Edition Enhanced (retail disc). It went so far and threw up an error. Tried reinstalling to no avail. Now it won't even let me uninstall it (it starts to uninstall then throws an error). It appears to have all the folders on my C drive now but it does not start. Should I try reinstalling or uninstalling in Safe Mode? Any other suggestions are greatly appreciated. I do not want to use the newer versions. In fact, I'd rather use v6 if possible as never had a seconds problem with it.

No help to your situation but I have Nero 7 Premium running quite OK in Windows 7 32bit.

Because it is/was on the list of programs likely to fail under Windows 7 via the M$ compatibility list I did 'Install' and 'run' as Administrator.

Do you have 'full' administrative privileges with the logon you are using to install it?

I have heard of problems when trying to install some programs without full Admin privileges. This is because you don't have full write access to 'Program Files' and some of the installation files go to the 'Virtual Store' within your user logon data area which causes problems.

I would try taking it off with the clean tool before trying to install again:

You may try to restore the system to a point before you started Nero install.

If for some reason you do not have a system restore point, you may try the Nero Clean tool as suggested but I do not have much hopes on it.

Personally, since your system is new I would prefer a fresh install of Windows 7 and start with a clean slate.

Take a back-up periodically and keep it so that you can easily restore and need not go through this pain again.

Before installing any new program make it a habit to create a manual restore point. ( In most cases Windows will create a system restore whenever you install a new program but still, till you get to know the nitty-gritty and gain confidence, a manual creation is suggested.)

Hi Sher, welcome to sevenforums. I agree with jumanji re doing a system restore but I wouldn't go as far as a new install if it would involve lots of re-installation of other programs and updates.
Personally, I would do the system restore to a date prior to the faulty installation. Then download a copy of Revo Uninstaller from Revo Uninstaller Pro - Uninstall Software, Remove Programs easily . Install this before you try re-installing the copy of Nero and you will find it a lot easier if you need to uninstall any programs/ failed installs in future. Also, you could try running the Nero setup program by right clicking on it and selecting to "Run as Administrator" which may get around your problem with the install.

Thanx all for the responses & the welcome. No one mentioned if SafeMode would help (either to install or uninstall). As far as I know, I do have full administration rights on my system. Yesterday, I noticed that my system restore was not enabled so before installing Nero, I did enable it and I did manually set a restore point. And no, I would not do a reinstall of windows as this is a brand new system (I had it custom built to my specifications) and I've had zero problems with it until trying the Nero. I may end up having to manually delete every file for Nero in program files and the registry though I know it will be easy to miss a file.

I think there are compatibility issues with using Nero 7 on the 64-bit versions of Windows 7.

You could always try using Microsoft's Virtual PC with XP Mode: Windows Virtual PC: Home Page

And there is also VMWare (better than XP Mode in my view): VMware Virtualization Support, Desktop and Datacenter Virtualization Product Downloads

Thank you, I was reading about the Virtual PC with XP Mode yesterday on the msoft site but I'm not really familiar with it. I wonder if installing that would effect how everything on my system is run. It's quite upsetting to find that msoft wasn't quite truthful when they advertised that windows7ultimate lets you run the older programs. My problem may have been solved by right clicking on the setup exe and choosing compatibilty mode the first time I tried to install Nero (if that was possible) but now I have to figure out how to uninstall it properly first.

I can understand your distress but maybe you can try any of the great, free disk burning programs available instead of running XP mode solely for nero. A lot of people here use IMGBurn but there are others too you can look up in the Free software thread.
