Windows 7: can't install/uninstall Nero 7

Your immediate problem is how to uninstall what can be termed as a "corrupt install" that refuses to be done away with.

If indeed you have set a manual restore point before installing Nero 7 , then why would you not restore it to that point? Any problems? And you only have to reinstall only the other programs that you have installed after Nero.

Thanks for the suggestions. I have used Imgburn for years but it just can't match the ease of using Nero Smart Start when doing copies and making data cd/dvd's or several other projects. Using Nero Smart Start is literally just one click. But I do know that Imgburn does have a fantastic engine.

edit- Thanks jumanji for your response. I do believe I am gonna have to do the restore. I've been a little leery of doing that as just don't want anything to get messed up and no, I've not installed anythng since Nero.

Well, not so thrlled with the restore in win7ult 64bit. I had created a restore point manually just before trying to install Nero 7. I called the point "just before installing nero". I booted into safemode and chose to restore my system to that point I had set. The restore seemed to take less than a minute and the computer booted normally into windows. My nero7 folder is still in program files with all the different nero folders (200 MB) folders. The only thing I see different is that there are no exe's now for any of the nero applications. I guess I can simply delete the nero folders now. Never had a restore work like that before. I thought it would put my system back to the EXACT state it was in before I tried to install nero but it did not since all folders are still there. Hopefully deleting them will get rid of all 'footprints' of nero on my system.

I don't think you can clean up Nero without the tool. That's why they have it. I had Nero 6 Ultra and it's a pita as far as the registry is concerned. I always waited until the optical drive stopped reacting before opening Nero because if it didn't like the particular disc, I had to uninstall, use the nero 6 clean tool, reinstall. After awhile I just decided to use other video software.

Try the cleanup tool. Run it 2 or 3 times until it removes all the Nero stuff.

Then get other video software. Nero is a "kitchen sink" video encoding and burning tool. It's ok for newbies but the hassles aren't worth the savings of not having to learn anything about video conversion. There are many small lightweight tools that do better conversions. Then just use Imgburn to burn. Any program that needs a "cleanup tool" to be removed I don't want on my machine.

I am pretty sure that the system restore would have restored the system files - including the registry - to the prior to Nero condition.
Just run>regedit>Edit>find> Nero and confirm that there are no Nero entries.

The left-over folders may be deleted manually - not a big deal. Many program uninstallers do leave such folders and that is where Revo uninstaller revels. Add it to your kitty to uninstall unwanted programs.

(And yes, the time taken by System Restore depends upon the volume of changes that had taken place after you had created that particular restore point. Where minimal changes have taken place it will be fast and that is no indication of its efficacy or otherwise. By the same token, sometimes System Restore may take a long time. It will say System Restore is initialising and appear to have hung. Do not lose your patience and abort System Restore. That will be inviting trouble - my personal experience. )

I don't get why you restored from safe mode. If the restore point is still there I'd run it from normal windows and see what happens.

It's a good idea before you get too involved to make a backup image to an external drive. It's not difficult sometimes to go from bad to worse. You can get free backup imaging programs that are easy to use here:

I like Macrium Reflect but there are several good ones.

If the restore from normal windows mode doesn't back off then I'd go with the cleanup tool. They make it available because of the negative feedback that people can't get Nero off once they put it on. There's no excuse for making programs nearly impossible to uninstall. It's just intimidation.

Yes, I did that right after restore and found several nero entries but I don't believe they are anything that would cause my system to throw up errors in future. For example, one entry was under my DVDFab simply as a path the same as ImgBurn is also there as a path and I don't even have Imgburn installed on this system yet. And I would not recognize which CLSID files were put in by the nero as they are nothing but a group of characters. I did see one entry that mentioned something like 'temp serial' which makes no sense to me as my nero is a purchased retail cd and I entered the real serial upon install.

When I set up my System Restore, I chose to have it restore both choices given to me- so it should have put my registry back exactly the way it was but it didn't. I will most likely back up the registry and then delete all the nero entries except for the one under my DVDFab.
