perhaps it has to be in focus,ie try clicking anywhere in audacity then try the R key and see if it starts recording , i know that for instance the hotkeys for winamp only work if i click in winamp first . seems a bit poitless if you have to click in the program to use a hotkey. try it and see .also check which version of audacity you have as the link i gave you was for audacity v1.2 .im guessing that whichever version you have the keystroke would be the same. | My System Specs | | System Manufacturer/Model Number Hewlett packard/p6512uk OS Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit 7600 CPU IIx4 amd athelon 635 processor Motherboard FOXCONN 2AA9 Memory 2x2gb Graphics Card ati radeon HD 5450 Sound Card (1) Realtek High Definition Audio (2) AMD High Definition Monitor(s) Displays samsung lcd tv 32" Screen Resolution 1360x 768 Keyboard wireless hp Mouse wireless Hp,optical PSU ? I'm using 1.3 Beta. It was the only version that supported Windows 7. | My System Specs | | Computer type PC/Desktop OS 7 Ultimate x64 CPU AMD Phenom II X6 1090T Motherboard Asus M4A89GTD Pro Memory Corsair XMS3 8GB DDr3 1600MHz Graphics Card EVGA GeForce GTX 670 2GB Sound Card Asus Xonar DX Monitor(s) Displays Acer H236HLbmjd Screen Resolution 1920x1080 Keyboard Mionix Zibal 60 Mouse Mionix Naos 5000 PSU Cooler Master GX650 Case Silverstone Raven 3 RV03B-W Cooling Akasa AK-CCX-4002HP Venom Hard Drives Seagate 320GB - WD Caviar Black 1TB @ SATA III 6Gb/s - WD Caviar Blue 500GB SATA-III 6Gb/s Internet Speed 60+MB/s Down, 2.8MB/s Up Antivirus Bitdefender Internet Security 2013 Browser Internet Explorer |

As mentioned, if you click anywhere on the Audacity window to bring it into focus and press R, recording should start.
It just worked for me, using 1.3.13. | My System Specs | | System Manufacturer/Model Number Self-built OS Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit CPU Intel Core i7-3770 Motherboard MSI Z77A-G45 Memory G.SKILL 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3 F3-10666CL9D-8GBNT Graphics Card Sapphire ATI Radeon HD 6670 Sound Card On-Board Realtek Monitor(s) Displays Samsung SyncMaster P2370HD, Dell 1703FPT Screen Resolution 1920 x 1080, 1280 x 1024 Keyboard Logitech K270 Mouse Logitech M705 PSU SeaSonic M12II SS-500GM Case Lian Li PC-9F Cooling Zalman CNPS9900ALED Hard Drives Samsung HD103SJ Internet Speed 16 Mbps Other Info Bose Companion 2 Multimedia Speakers |

Oops! I was pressing Ctrl + R The thing is, I want to be able to do it without the window being in focus. If it helps, I'm recording a Let's Play series, and Fraps does terribly recording Mic + In-game sound. Plus I'd rather have another stream separately edit. | My System Specs | | Computer type PC/Desktop OS 7 Ultimate x64 CPU AMD Phenom II X6 1090T Motherboard Asus M4A89GTD Pro Memory Corsair XMS3 8GB DDr3 1600MHz Graphics Card EVGA GeForce GTX 670 2GB Sound Card Asus Xonar DX Monitor(s) Displays Acer H236HLbmjd Screen Resolution 1920x1080 Keyboard Mionix Zibal 60 Mouse Mionix Naos 5000 PSU Cooler Master GX650 Case Silverstone Raven 3 RV03B-W Cooling Akasa AK-CCX-4002HP Venom Hard Drives Seagate 320GB - WD Caviar Black 1TB @ SATA III 6Gb/s - WD Caviar Blue 500GB SATA-III 6Gb/s Internet Speed 60+MB/s Down, 2.8MB/s Up Antivirus Bitdefender Internet Security 2013 Browser Internet Explorer |

You can also set up a timed recording, from Transport.
You don't have to worry about focus. | My System Specs | | System Manufacturer/Model Number Self-built OS Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit CPU Intel Core i7-3770 Motherboard MSI Z77A-G45 Memory G.SKILL 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3 F3-10666CL9D-8GBNT Graphics Card Sapphire ATI Radeon HD 6670 Sound Card On-Board Realtek Monitor(s) Displays Samsung SyncMaster P2370HD, Dell 1703FPT Screen Resolution 1920 x 1080, 1280 x 1024 Keyboard Logitech K270 Mouse Logitech M705 PSU SeaSonic M12II SS-500GM Case Lian Li PC-9F Cooling Zalman CNPS9900ALED Hard Drives Samsung HD103SJ Internet Speed 16 Mbps Other Info Bose Companion 2 Multimedia Speakers |
