"Application was unable to start properly (0xc0150004)" error message

Any quick help would be greatly appreciated. I was trying to fix some BSOD's and windows update issues on a friend's pc. I thought i was successful until i kept getting "Setup has detected that .NET Framework 4 needs to be repaired. Do not restart your computer until the repair is complete."

After some research, I thought I could resolve the issue with the .net framework cleanup tool. After attempting that, now I get the "Application was unable to start properly (0xc0150004)" error message. The only program I've been able to start has been IE8. This also means I wasn't able to run the BSOD tool you guys provide for posting.

I've tried startup repair more than a couple times. Also tried system restore from the windows recovery environment and it said it was unable to complete. 50% of the time, when trying to get into the recovery environment or just the regular system, I get an "irql_less_or_not_eual" blue screen.

When i originally started working on the pc i cleaned a bunch of viruses off (or so i thought). I have a sneaking suspicion that this issue was caused by a virus with a sneaky backdoor and is masquerading as some .net files.

the system was built by my friend and has: Asus p5ql pro MOBO, Intel core 2 duo, currently 4gigs mem (2x2gb corsair), NVIDIA GeForce 8400 GS and a WD HD.

I hope I've given some good starting information.

    Thanks

I hate to say it, but... maybe try a clean install of Windows in another partition, then get your data from the current boot partition.

Thanks for your reply, i7. I'm going to start working on this today, and i'll post when i have some progress to report. Any ideas as to what may have caused this from the steps i mentioned?

Also, would you suggest trying this link for restoring the data -
    Windows.old folder - Restore into a new installation[2]=Backup%20Restore

    Thanks again

Was that error message followed up by "The application configuration is not correct"? (Possibly in the details view).

If so then it was more than likely because of a mismatched or missing CRT library. /maybe/ a .net lib but see this more with missing CRT libraries. Some of which are installed by default on a windows install but a lot of them are installed by programs as you install them. So if one or more of them have been deleted from your computer because of the virus cleanup then you need to reinstall them.

Problem is, there are many and they typically get installed by your software package installs. So you are sort of looking at reinstalling every software package that currently dosn't run...

Well that's the explaination as it looks to me anyway. I know you are beyond that point now so a clean installl is really the way to go.

The dialog box did not have a detail button or anyway to get more information, just the ok button.

    Update:

I created a new partition and installed windows. Nothing has been installed on this partition except the updated driver for the nvidia geforce 8400 gs. I've installed all windows updates (with some difficulty) except for service pack 1. I've gotten some bluescreens during attempted installation and here's what WhoCrashed said about the dumpfile:

On Sat 10/1/2011 12:22:01 AM GMT your computer crashed
    crash dump file: C:\Windows\Minidump\093011-41043-01.dmp
This was probably caused by the following module: ntoskrnl.exe (nt+0x705C0)
    Bugcheck code: 0xDE (0x2, 0xFFFFF8A027900040, 0xFFFFF8A027900041, 0x12AEFA8C0)
    Error: POOL_CORRUPTION_IN_FILE_AREA
    file path: C:\Windows\system32\ntoskrnl.exe
    product: Microsoft® Windows® Operating System
    company: Microsoft Corporation
    description: NT Kernel & System
Bug check description: This indicates that a driver has corrupted pool memory that is used for holding pages destined for disk.
The crash took place in the Windows kernel. Possibly this problem is caused by another driver which cannot be identified at this time.

I'm going to make sure i have the most up to date drivers for everything, but is this a common occurrence for users installing service pack 1? Can anyone give me some insight into the WhoCrashed message? I've never had such a hard time installing updates on a system before.

    Thanks

    Ok...Help!!!

I was unable to make any progress... still getting the BSOD for pool corruption. I've attached the dump files and system report as per the BSOD posting instructions. Please, could someone take a look and let me know what drivers i need to update? thanks.
