Live Messenger won't sign-in automatically at startup in Windows7

I have two Dell Computers (XPS 8100 & 8300) both are running Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit. Windows Live Messenger 2011 won't sign in automatically at start-up even when the boxes are checked for it to save the info and do so.
I can sign in manually, but I'd like wlm to sign in automatically when I start up my computer each morning like it used to on all my former computers that ran older versions of the windows os. I've only started having this problem when I bought new computers running Windows 7.
I tried running the live repair, that didn't help. I've tried uninstall and reinstall. That didn't help either.

Hi GingerB, welcome to Seven Forums.
Right click Messenger in start menu, select compatibility tab. Tick 'Run as... box, then take your pick from drop down menu. Include Run as administrator check box.

REPLY TO RODERUNNER Live Messenger won't sign-in automatically

Changing the compatibility seems to have helped. I rebooted and it signed in. I then cold booted and it was signed in, so looks like that solved the problem. The only thing I'm noticing now is that the little colored box that used to show up over top of my pinned taskbar icon is missing. There used to be a little colored box that indicated I was signed in. It would be helpful if there was a way to know without opening messenger. In the old version of messenger, it placed an icon in the system tray and it showed in indicator to let you know if you were signed in or not. I hope the next version will have such a thing.

Thanks again,
GingerB

Thanks. I knew that, but for some reason didn't think about it. That icon has the green square indicator and that is helpful.

I appreciate your expertise. I tried in other forums to get an answer to this and no one could help, and yet it turned out to be a simple fix.

I'm not sure why there was a problem in Windows 7 in the first place. I hope Microsoft gets the issue fixed in the future so that people don't have to mess around with compatibility settings.

Anything I find that has compatibility problems usually has another program that does the same job.

Issue not solved on other computer (Dell XPS 8300)

Well, it looks like this is not solving the issue on the other computer. I tried setting the compatibility to Vista service pack 2 like I did on my Dell XPS 8100 and it didn't work for the Dell XPS 8300. I went back and changed the compatibility to Windows XP service pack 3, and still won't sign in.

Any more ideas?

Which version of Live Messenger are you using? If you are using Windows Live Messenger 2011, it should work fine. If you are using that version and still can't sign in, then either your username/password is wrong, or you have the ports blocked and therefore, it can't connect.
