Windows 7 - Cannot set Default Program

I want to set VLC as my default media player but it isn't listed in the program window shown for setting Default Programs. Another media player I have installed (Daum PotPlayer) isn't shown either. How do I go about selecting my default? I know I can set file associations but that is certainly the long way around. Help, please.

Right click a file and select open with, and specify program.
Now click on browse and find your installed software's main exe file.
Then check 'always use this program' box and then ok ok.

Thanks for your post, speedgamer01. Tried you suggestion and the file selected opened in VLC, but VLC still did not appear in the Default Programs list for selection...neither did PotPLayer (which has taken over as the default). Still can't get VLC as my default.

If that box was checked that i mentioned the filetype should be already associated with VLC.
Go through it again.

If you have successfully set vlc as the default player, on your movie thumbnails you should see a traffic cone that is the vlc icon , this will show that your movies will open with vlc if you cant see the icon....
click organise / folder and search options, click the view tab and check the box that says display file icon on thumbnail.

also check the box to show thumbnails.

To whs: Thanks for the input, but I don't want to do it the long way...I know it is available
To boohbah: Thanks for your input...icons are showing and they are all the Daum PotPlayer
