Windows 7: Windows Fax and Scan, cannot connect to fax modem as before.

Windows Fax and Scan, cannot connect to fax modem as before.

I used WFS about five months ago and it worked fine. Same os(7x64), same USR5670 modem, which has always worked perfectly. I downloaded Hyperterminal and completed a connection. The modem query responds and all looks fine.
I have deselected WFS/rebooted, selected/rebooted to no avail. Is there anything registry wise that may be in the way?
As soon as I select WFS, there is an info. space at the bottom stating "0 items" and "no fax accounts are configured", which seems to mean that the program isn't linked to a modem. So, in the lower left corner I select "Fax", then up to "new fax" which pulls up the "modem setup window. I choose "connect to a fax modem" and I get "An error occurred. Please try the operation later, or contact your administrator". If I go up to "tools" and select "fax settings" absolutely nothing happens. Then I went to "tools", "fax accounts", then "add", the fax setup window re-appeared.
As always, any help will be most appreciated. Please tell me anything but Clean install, ok? Thanks everybody.
