Nero Burning ROM 11 conflict with Windows 7

Solved: After installing Intel RAID Rapid Storage driverson both my computers, which have SATA hard drives and burners, then Nero 7, 8, 10 and 11 all ran flawlessly on Vista and Windows 7.

RAID Rapid Storage provides improved performanace and reliability for systems equipped with SATA discs for desktop, mobile and server platforms.

I have recently installed Nero Burning ROM 11 on my Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit OS, and have noticed an inconsistency which I hope someone may be able to shed some light on.

    1. If I try to burn a data, multi-session disc, in ISO (joliet) format, using write only -R DVD disks, the burn fails and the disk becomes un-useable. This happens whether Windows 7 burning software is turned on or off.

Nero displays the following error message:

Nero Burning ROM 11 conflict with Windows 7-error-message-burn-failure-nero.png

    2. However, if I burn exactly the same data multi-session disc using a rewriteable +RW DVD disk, it successfully burns every time!

    3. At first glance it would seem to indicate that the write only disks are incompatible, but not so. Once a session has been successfully burnt, using the rewriteable +RW discs, then any further sessions where the write only –R disks are used burn perfectly every time!

    4. However, if the PC is turned off completely, and rebooted, any burns done with the write only –R disks will fail, unless a preliminary burn is first done using rewriteable +RW disks.
    • This means it is a necessary prerequisite to burn a data session using a rewriteable DVD before a successful session can be burnt on a write only disk.
    5. It seems to have something to do with a memory being stored for the optical drive as shown by the following scenario.
    • First a rewriteable +RW DVD disk is formatted in UDF using Windows 7 burning software; so it acts like a flash drive.
    • After burning data to the disc the PC is logged off and then back on.
    • When the computer logs on, the following error message comes up, as shown below:
Nero Burning ROM 11 conflict with Windows 7-error-message-win7-udf-format.png

This seems to indicate that some memory item has been saved; or a program has not shut down properly.

    6. Now consider the scenario where:
    • A UDF disk has been formatted and data burnt onto it, but the PC has not been logged off and on again.
    • Now a second session is run using Nero to successfully burn a multi-session data disk using a rewriteable +RW DVD disc in ISO (Joliet) format.
    • When the PC is now logged off and back on again, the error message does not appear.
This implies that the erroneous memory has been wiped out by running the Nero program to burn the last data disc.

But like before, this will only work if the latter session is run using a +RW rewriteable DVD. If a –R write only disk is used before the session is run with the +RW rewriteable disk, the -R write only disc will be ruined.

I’d be very grateful for any help anyone can offer on this issue.

I had a similar problem a while back with burning DVD-R. And, I was also using Nero -- but it was version 9.x.

Turns out that the DVD burner actually wasn't able to burn DVD-R. I swapped in a different burner (they cost $20 those days) and was able to burn DVD-R just fine. The specs on the burner didn't say that it could NOT handle DVD-R, that was just what happened. The burner was a rebranded Optiarc (I think this is Sony).

Do you have a spare DVD drive layiong around you can try. or even a different brand of Media?

Nero itself should have no issues at all with what your wanting to do.
So, my guess would it must be either the drive itself or the Media. One of the 2 aren't getting along very well it sounds like.

I know my other LG drive would happily burn just about anything. But some Media types it just didnt like.
    I/E Verbatium -R ... no issue
    Memorex -R no issue
    Maxell -R ... 100% coaster rate

Thanks Mark and Wishmaster for the input. I have two Pioneer SATA burners in the PC ... both the same model: DVR-219L. I bought these about 6 months ago when I built the PC with all new components and they cost about $40 Austalian each. The Aussie dollar was about equal to the US $ at that point.

And I'm using TDK Gold disks for the -R; & TDK Silver disks for the +RW. I will try a different brand of media, and take the ASUS burner out of my back room PC and put it in the flagship and see if those two factors make a difference.

The thing I can't understand is why Nero can successfully burn the -R discs after I've burnt a +RW disk; but not before I've done this. Burning the +RW seems to set something right which stays in place until I reboot the PC. And that is weird.

The other thing I didn't mention is that when I first built the PC I had XP Pro on the first partition of the HD and Nero 8 ran flawlessly using the same burners and disks in the same PC. That's why I thought it must be a Windows 7 issue.

I also wondered if it might have anything to do with the fact that I'm running a SATA 3 solid state Corsair HD and the mobo is an Intel DX58SO2 extreme board with an Intel i7 960 CPU?

I also tried running Nero 11 on my 32bit Windows 7 installation but got the same negative result.

When I frist built the PC I trialled Nero Burning ROM 10, but every time I attempted a burn I got a BSOD. Hard to know what the problem is.

That is odd, and I really do not have and idea why it would, act that way.

I had 1 other thought though...

There are parts of Nero 11 that are ... well, buggy.
One I know of for example: Encoding a MKV file ->DVD with Nero Vision using a 2pass will bug it, and produce a audio only DVD, with just a black screen for video.
But, if you use a 1 pass encode works as it should.

Have you tried launching Nero Express, and burn a multi-session DVD that way?
It may be possible Burning ROM 11 has a bug with Multi-Session discs.

The question is how to isolate the program, memory, etc, that causes this.
It may be possible Burning ROM 11 has a bug with Multi-Session discs.
Nero Burning ROM is a basic burning program and does not have Nero Vision nor Nero Express.

I actually ran the problem by Nero and sent them the various error reports, etec. However, they said it was a third party problem and not a fault in Nero; and therefore they could not provide a solution.

I have only tried to burn data files, which include some MP3 music items. But the glitch occurs no matter what I try to burn.

I can live with it if I have to, and use the work around of doing a burn on the +RW disc before doing burns on the various -R discs that I use to store data. Basically I store data on a daily basis using Windows 7 burning software on a UDF formatted -R disc; and also on my desktop. Then once a week transfer all the updated data thro Nero to a multi-session -R disc in ISO (joliet) format as an archive. This way the disc is safe as it can't be edited except through Nero. With the multi session UDF format discs, even if they are burnt with Nero as data discs, they can still be edited by Win7 burning software when open on the desk top, without having to open any burning program, which makes them vulnerable to accidental changes. Also Nero verifies the data that is burnt.

Update: I have done a bit more experimenting and though I haven't found the cause of the problem I know definitively what triggers it. These are the steps I took:

    1. Burnt a rewriteable +RW multi-session data disc in ISO (joliet) format with Nero to prep it for burning a -R disc.

    2. Burnt a write only -R multi-session data disc in ISO (joliet) format with Nero.

    3. Burnt data onto a UDF formatted disc with Windows 7 burning software.

    4. Nero continued to work fine with -R discs.

    5. Burnt more data onto the UDF formatted disc with Windows 7 burning software.

    6. Logged off and back on again.

    7. Nero continued to burn -R discs with no problem.

    8. Turned the PC off completely and re-booted.

    9. Tried to burn data onto the -R disc and it failed.

    * So the problem only occurs after booting the PC from a cold start.

There's no doubt something is being turned on, or set back to default, or whatever, when the PC boots. Burning a +RW disc turns this off, and it stays off till the PC is turned off and re-booted.

The question is how to isolate whatever program, memory, etc, that may be causing the glitch.

Hello there. I don't have Nero 11 (still on v.9).

    1. Being able to burn RW media but not R media on first try: have you tried running the burn process at a reduced speed?

    2. Is the firmware of the Pioneer DVR 219L up-to-date?

Hi Paul. Thanks for the input. Have tried burning at very slow speed; and just to cover all bases, at top speed. And yes, firmware for Pioneer burners are up to date.

    Solved

Update: I am quite embarrassed writing this update, but at the same time extremely pleased that I have found the cause of this problem.

After building my current PC in March 2011, when I first installed the drivers for the Intel mobo, for some unknown reason I got the notion that the Intel Rapid Storage drivers were only necessary if RAID was being used on the PC, so I never installed them as I don't use RAID, even though they were listed on the installation disc.

While helping repair a friend's PC, I happened to notice the Rapid Storage drivers listed in the Start Menu. When I hoverd the mouse pointer over it, the message came up: "Provides Improved performance and reliability for systems equipped with SATA discs; for mobiles, desktops and servers."

My Intel mobo and Pioneer burners are both SATA, and I had updated the latest drivers for both. However, the Intel auto check of drivers online did not show the Rapid Storage drivers as being absent or needing updating. And they're not listed in the drivers section for the mobo in the web site, but as an independent item.

Since installing the Rapid Storage drivers, Nero works perfectly first time every time. Hard to believe I missed this from the get go! Also when I had burnt a DVD to be used like a flash drive, in USD format using Windows 7 burning software, every time I would eject it, an error messge came up, saying it had not finished writing the disc so it could be used on other PCs. I would have to try and eject it 2 or 3 times before it finished writing. This problem has also disappeared. Finally, when attempting to open an existing DVD, it was very slow and often took 2 or 3 attempts. Ditto for this problem being fixed.

Maybe I missed the obvious, but I can't understand why Intel haven't got it emblazoned in big red letters, spelling out the necessity to install Rapid Storage and why it doesn't show up in the auto driver check online.

I use the rapid Storage myself as well, even though I do not use RAID simply because things seem smoother overall. I never even thought that it could cause or resolve the issue you were having though.

Glad it worked out and resolved your problem :)
