Is Libre Office the best free choice for word processing?
I need to work with word files and don't want to pay for an entire software suite. Is Libre Office the best bet?

I've never used it, so I can't comment on it.
However, I have used Open Office and liked it a lot.

thanks! I have heard that Libre Office is Open Office just faster or sumthin
I'll give it a shot
(okay did some reading. It seems pissed off Oracle employees left and started LibreOffice as a full community driven endeavor. OpenOffice, under Oracles control, seemed to piss them off)

I use Office 2007 so haven't seriously used any of the alternatives.
However, in addition to Open Office and Libre Office this one gets a good mention as maybe better
Free office software, Kingsoft office suite free 2012
I think Visual Basic Macros may always limit full compatibility.
Also Open & Libre have portable versions if that counts.
I use both MSO and Libre Office; as far as I can tell Libre Office is pretty decent although I still prefer MSO since it does quite a few things more to my liking - e.g. Excel's pivot tables.
