When shutting down system reboots instead

Greetings all,

I've just finished a Win7 Ultimate build on the following system:

680i board, (latest BIOS latest drivers)
Q6600
8 GB Ram
WD Raptor (OS), WD Black (Data)
285 GTX

and a fresh install of Win7, (no other software beyond basic drivers). When I hit shut down the system reboots on me instead, it runs through the 'standard' shut down process but it goes to what almost seems like a 'standby mode' then I get the BIOS beep, and the system starts rolling again.

So far the only way I've been able to shut it down is to wait until it hits the time that seems like 'standby' and hit the power button. I've seen a few mentions of this but no real fixes for it. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Side note, this system until last night was running Vista home Prem 64 just fine for the last 2 years give or take.

Driver issues can cause this behavior. Also, Wake On LAN - which can be disabled in BIOS and/or NIC settings in the OS. Also, unplug any extra USB/1394 devices and test.

Im assuming you are shutting down via the start>shutdown button< right? does it say shutdown or re-start as default? Mine says re-start

Greetings Antman, All of the drivers, (board, VidCard etc...) are the most up-to-date; I've tried both the EVGA specific and the nVidia unified drivers, (both are currently at the same version for both board and video card.) I've also disconnected all USB based items, (it was more difficult than it should have been to find a non-USB mouse/keyboard,) but that didn't have any affect either.

Wake on LAN has been disabled on both the NIC, (one NIC has completely been disabled the other has had the Wake On disabled,) as well as being disabled on in the BIOS. On a similar note I've also updated to the latest BIOS, (granted the most recent update there was in '08).

All bring me back to the 'sleep like' state then restart.

zigzag3143, Correct I'm shutting down via the shut down button. Mine is defaulting to Shut down, but I can control which is in the default location and I've tried both shut down and restart in the default location, neither give the desired results.

Any other ideas/thoughts?

does anything show in event viewer? Is there an unknown device in devmgr?

McAfee had an issue, some time ago, with some ?.sys file which also caused this.

Sadly, possible causes span a wide range of possibilities. If you are confident in your skills, try uninstalling power related device in device manager. Windows will re-install after booting.

Heads up - always install chipset drivers FIRST. These affect all other drivers.

Don't know how much help I can be on this one.

Event viewer is clean, (short of the time or two where I had to hard shutdown to install something new and my timing was off...) and no unknown devices in the device manager.

Antman, by power related devices do you mean like uninstall the video card drivers etc... then let them reinstall?

There is another report at SF about nVidia drivers causing the same affect.

Download Driver Sweeper.
Uninstall your video.
DO NOT allow Windows to auto install
Run Driver Sweeper - removing ONLY the video drivers.
Boot.
Allow Windows to (attempt) an auto install.
If it fails, manually install your choice of drivers (some users report most current nVida is faultu - i don't know).
Test.

Thanks for the tip but at this point it's starting to smell like I'm going to have to wait Nvidia out on this one. I tried sweeping the drivers for the video card, letting Win decide which were the best, same result. Sweep again, download the latest, same result. Wipe the Drive and let win pick the drives no love. I've been looking for older Nv drivers but they don't seem to keep them around. Do you happen to know which version of the drivers are being reported as 'good'?

the upshot of all of this though is I can get Win7 to intsall in about 20 minutes give or take.

My emachines laptop D525 has never shut down all the way. It just reboots; the only way to get it to shutdown is to do a hard shutdown. I have tried settings and even other shutdown programs and still have this issue. Mine was a factory install and it came with no discs. When I contacted emachines support, they told me to do everything that I already have done. I found a few more threads about this issue and have subscribed to them all. Hopefully I can find an answer. Thanks!
