Uninstall Registry Helper

Can anyone help please. Yesterday I downloaded a programme called Free File Opener and when it was installed I noticed a new icon on my desktop called Registry Helper. A google search indicates this as something sinister and should be removed but it looks very complicated to do so without it causing all sorts of problems.

I have Microsoft Security Essentials installed and am at present running a full scan.

I have also just downloaded Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and am doing a full scan with that which has already detected one connected object which I quarantined.

Can anyone help me to remove Registry Helper from my computer please?

My first impulse would be to do a System Restore to a time prior to downloading Free File Opener.

That should get rid of both Free File Opener and Registry Helper.

Another idea would be to download Revo Uninstaller and use it to uninstall both of those applications.

I assume you are willing to get rid of FFO as well as RH?

Good idea to run MSE and Malwarebytes.

Keep your eyes peeled for odd PC behavior.

many thanks for quick replies. I did think of doing a system restore to just before I installed the programs and I also have Revo uninstaller already downloaded but just worried I will cause more problems if i go down either routes?

System Restore is completely harmless in my experience. Maybe one time in 40 it won't successfully restore, but it does no harm in such a case.

Revo: It has 4 basic settings to determine how deeply it looks into your system to uninstall all remnants of the program. See pic below. "Moderate" is the default, but you can choose "advanced". If you choose advanced, you should be careful about accepting what it then recommends--you could make an error and delete more than you should.

"Moderate" or even "safe" may work well in your case, depending on how tough Registry Helper is to get rid of.

I'd suggest System Restore as a first choice as it is harmless.

If that fails, try Revo, but you may want to post back here regarding what it finds and what choices you should make if you choose "advanced" mode.

Malwarebytes has found 35 malicious items all due to Registry helper. shall i remove them with the Malwarebytes before doing system restore?

I'm not sure it would matter, but I would say yes, let Malware Bytes have its way.

I did a full scan with Malwarebytes and removed all the items it found, did a quick scan with MWAM which showed all OK and there is now no sign of the Register Helper either on my desktop or in my Programs and Features nor in Revo Uninstaller so it looks as if it has gone thank goodness. Do I need to do anything else?
