I need a new anti virus program

I was using AVAST as my anti-virus software. It was supposed to be the free version, but it stopped working the other day and they wanted me to buy. I can't spend any money for a new program. I live on a fixed income and have to budget everything closely. Does anyone know of a good, reliable, free anti-virus software program?

    What about Microsoft Security Essentials?

I think I have AVAST removed. It wasn't easy. The regular uninstall didn't do it. Is gthere a way I can find out if it is entirely removed?

Please remove Avast via the link below....
    http://files.avast.com/files/eng/aswclear5.exe

    Replace with

Microsoft Security Essentials - Free Antivirus for Windows

    Good luck!

Good thread I am looking for a new Anti-Virus program as well currently am using AVG free.

I am looking for something that is non-resource heavy how is MSE in comparison to AVG? Or just in general?

Is your free AV tool a ‘resource pig?’ By Fred Langa
For me — for now — nothing in these numbers would alter my recommendation — and personal use — of Microsoft Security Essentials. It’s free, it’s in widespread use, and it has proven itself in the real world. And on most systems, it has little effect on system resources.

As posted here many of us recommend MSE and using Windows 7 built in firewall. Many also use Malwarebytes Anti Malware because it also works great and works well with MSE.
Linda661 how did you remove Avast?

I use AVG paid version on the computers here so I would recommend that.
Have used it for years with success & see no need to change at this point.

From a BSOD perspective we recommend MSE.

I used aswclear.exe. I had to go into safe mode first. I hope it was as effective as aswclear5.exe which you guys are recommending. Can something bad happen if I didn't get it all out?
