Solved <ASK> Macrium Reflect FREE backup to Ext HDD fat32

i have a simple question to ask....

is anyone here using Macrium (free)...?


I just did a macrium disk image backup to my fat32 external HDD


I read somewhere that in order to do the image recovery, the external HDD has to be on NTFS format. Is that true...?


Should I format my fat32 external hdd to ntfs, or, does macrium reflect able to do image recovery from fat32 external hdd?


second, im new with using macrium (used acronis before)... should i create linux or winPE recovery CD...? Is it crucial for recovery...?


can I do image recovery without linux/winPE recovery CD...?
Is it possible to do image recovery from windows? (when im running the OS)

Hi kungfupanda and welcome to Seven Forums. I have never backed up to a FAT32 formatted disk. I can't see how it would save the image which is normally one file with FAT32's limitation of 4GB maximum file size unless it splits the file. Unless you need the disk as FAT32 for other reasons I would re format it as NTFS. Be aware that you will lose any data on the drive however. No you cannot restore an image from within a running Windows installation. You need to use a recovery disk you create using Macrium. I would recommend that you create the PE recovery disk even though it involves a 1.7GB download of the WAIK as it is a far more flexible environment than the Linux one.

Im Macrium you can select the partitions you wish to backup so unlike Windows own imageing solution you don't have to do them all. Be aware though that the minimum partitions you need to backup to restore a windows system is your C: partition and, if you have it, the 100MB System partition. In Macrium there is a button on the left side to do an image of all partitions necessary to recover windows.
