Windows 7 will not download latest itunes 10.6 program why??

Hello, i'm new to this forum and am ready to throw my PC on the road due to frustration.
Last night, whilst plugging my iphone 4 s into my windows 7 based PC with 64 bit to back up my phone things went horribly wrong.
The system told me in itunes that i need to down load the latest upgrade for itunes.
I tried this and with my phone plugged in through a USB port to charge it went haywire.
At the same time, as i was down loading the latest itunes 10.6 update, up pops the words "A network error occured while attempting to read from the file:
    C:\windows installer\itunes 64 msi".
    So i went back to the download page and clicked on the other download link and this time this message came up;
This itunes installer is intended for 32 bit versions of windows. Please download and instal the 64-bit itunes installer instead.
I could not find that installer so used other recommended installers, to no avail.
I tried re-installing the 64 bit version at least 6+ times from other sites, but the same error message keeps coming up as the 1st one i wrote above.
My iphone 4s is stuck on a picture showing a USB cable going to an itunes symbol. It will do nothing. It won't turn on/off and now my computer won't even recognize it when plugged in! Where did the driver go all of a sudden?
I reset my PC to a couple of days ago, then tried loading the program again, made no difference. I have updated drivers, iphone on the list, but not showing any problems.
I did a system clean, some problems, now sorted. I don't know what else to do?
I need to go get another phone now as i run several small businesses and need client contact all the time, but will answer this forum as soon as i can.
Please, can someone help, regards 'perthpickers'.

    Welcome to Seven Forums.

There are two ways to upgrade iTunes to the current version. The first one is to upgrade it when you get a notice from Apple. The other way is to download the latest version of iTunes on the Hard Drive and then install it.

I prefer the latter method because I remain aware about what is happening. I suggest that you go to iTunes 10.6 for Windows (64 bit) and after downloading the 64-bit Setup Program on the hard drive, you install it.

Whether you succeed or fail by doing this, please do send a feedback on what happened.

I'll probably never own a fancy phone, but try this and this.

Try a system restore to a point before your system got screwed up, make sure your phone is disconnected then download the 64-bit version of iTunes and save it to your hard drive as suggested by Wanchoo.

Before you install it, right-click the installer and choose Run as Administrator to give it elevated privileges. Accept the UAC prompt if you get one, and then let the installer run.

Once iTunes is installed it'll run a check for updates. Check what is being offered - it'll probably be Quicktime, Safari and an iTunes update - and select what you need.

Why did I think the phone was the more important problem?

I'm slow, he seemed to have already went to get another phone. . .

    Hi, thanks for the replies fella's. I'm not sure how to reply to individual posts, so here is what i have written below;

I tried downloading from the link you put up in your response. I went to my 'downloads' file and dragged the file over to Drive C and it made itself its own file.
I double clicked on that and tried down loading it from the 'Apple software update' box, clicked the 'itunes' box and clicked instal 1 item. It just looped, would not down load, but the box kept coming back, i clicked again, still nothing, the box keeps coming back, looping and not down loading..!

Did you try right-clicking the installer and choosing Run as Administrator?

Some software will refuse to install unless it is given elevated privileges or UAC is temporarily disabled.

The phone is just as important as my PC, why?? Because i sell on ebay, and 3 or 4 other sites, i have people constantly calling and emailing me asking me prices and organising to pick up things'...my phone and PC's are not toys to just pass the time of day!! they are my tools to make money..!
It's just a bonus to play music, watch movies and youtube and stuff around with apps when you are bored.!
Got the phone sorted by the way, the dealer re-loaded new soft ware which is what is conflicting with my PC which is what i'm trying to help get fixed on here!
Oh, yeah, by the way, i have lost calls and can't recover them...so yes, the phone is almost more important than the PC.!

I am not at all clear whether you were successful in downloading the iTunes Setup file or not. Depending on the Browser you are using and how it is configured, when you press the Download Button on the web-page towards the top right, you get a Window asking you to confirm the downloading of the iTunes64Setup.exe file and where to put it.

Did you get that file? Where did you put this file which is a little over 70 megabytes? If you can locate it then please install it in the manner that SeaVixen32 has suggested.

Hi, i have followed your instruction to a 'T'. It did not work. I right clicked on the file that said [under Apple update] in my C drive "softwareupdater.exe" and up popped a few things and one of them was "run as administrator" so i clicked on that and it opened up that same panel, i clicked on install itunes update and it went about looping again and still will not instal?
It was reset to 1 day ago before i had any problems before i down loaded the link again.
I have to walk away from this machine as i know i want to smash it..so three deep breaths and i'm shutting down. I spent 4 hours on it last night and so far 7 hours today, just trying to download itunes 10.6 updates.
    Not happy at all.
