Is Net Framework Client 4.0 needed for consumer use?

It takes nearly an hour to install the update and subsequent patches for it. Is it really needed for average consumer? What does it do exactly?

My impression is that it might be called upon to run features in a modern program. If so and it's not installed, will it call for it? I think in the past with Frameworks it doesn't prompt and takes research to find it's needed, unless the Program installs it itself.

I read the Overview but still can't determine if this is needed for users who are building these apps, or for apps which have already been built using it that might need to be installed and run.

Sorry I'm so thick on this. It confounds me, especially as I watch startup times slow after all of the updates and patches involved.

    Hi Greg
Most end users dont't need .Net 4.0 because it's intended to developers and as per the overview it walks side by side with the previous versions of .Net.
If you don't need it don't download it but in the future if MS deliver a program that need .Net 4 you will receive a warning that you have to upgrade your existing .Net program.
    That's it.

    Good day

.Net Framework, is a very common issue I have ran into with games.

    A short story:
My friend had a computer. (in terrible state with so many services broken, he needs a reinstall) One day a game of his stop working. He basically reinstall and uninstall his game multiple times and couldn't understand why it wasn't working. After reading logs, troubleshooting, and looking up error codes I uninstalled all of .NET frameworks and reinstalled them one at a time. What do you know the game is working again

Also my bosses computer also had an issue, he had some problems with office suite software. Turns out he needed .Net Framework

    In my opinion YES.
    The cons vs pros.
I mean it does no harm for the most part, and today's program more and more are needing it.

some of my games ask for netframework 4.0 to be installed to run um not sure how it goes with other programs. Pretty sure other programs might ask for it.

    Greg,

.NET Framework 4 is installed on all computers here.

    FYI.
    The .NET Framework for Users

If you do not develop .NET Framework applications, but you use them, you do not need specific knowledge about the .NET Framework or its operation.
For the most part, the .NET Framework is completely transparent to users.

If you are using the Windows operating system, the .NET Framework may already be installed on your computer.

In addition, if you install an application that requires the .NET Framework, the application's setup program might install a specific version of the .NET Framework on your computer.
In some cases, you may see a dialog box that asks you to install the .NET Framework.
If you have just tried to run an application when this dialog box appears and if your computer has Internet access, you can go to a webpage that lets you install the missing version of the .NET Framework.

In general, you should not uninstall any versions of the .NET Framework that are installed on your computer, because an application you use may depend on a specific version and may break if that version is removed. Note that multiple versions of the .NET Framework can be loaded on a single computer at the same time. This means that you do not have to uninstall previous versions in order to install a later version.
    FYI.

    .NET Framework 4

What version of the .NET Framework is included in which version of the OS?

    It is a damn nuisance.

Hopefully, MS will move away from encouraging developers to use it.

If you are trying to run a program that requires net frame - you will need to have the relevant one installed.

Otherwise you have to d/l and install it.

Better yet - just don't use the program.

Try and find an alternative that doesn't require some gigantic additional supporting framework.
