my experience is that cnet/download.com are reliable in so far as the files are clean and not viral.
I can not speak to the specific applications as I've never needed a download manager, I have super fast internet.

There are also plugins for firefox and chrome for download management.
If you use one of those two browsers you might want to try doing it that way first.

Real Player also offers downloading videos from Youtube, you need to move your mouse cursor on the screen to see the download button.
Besides there is also this open source software that does several things including conversion to other files. Free Download Manager | Features

Cnet hasn't been relevant for a decade or so. If you are looking for freeware, there's no better than MajorGeeks.com.

If you are using Firefox as your browser this is the best Video downloader. It works on most sites. DownloadHelper - Media download Firefox extension

In my personal experience, CNET has never given me bad software. So go for it.
But I'll recommend Orbit Downloader. It also has a program built in that downloads video from Youtube and other streaming media sites.
