I use CCleaner...all of it...start up app disabling, clean up and registry cleaning. At default settings, CCleaner doesn't do anything harmful to the registry, and you can always choose the backup option.

There are people who say there is no need to clean the registry, but I can give several examples of where CCleaner has resolved issues for me BY cleaning the registry. It's a safe program to use, and trusted pretty much everywhere I read.

It is as safe as a registry cleaner can be but no such tool can be 100% safe so always use the backup option.

I think the best advice about reg cleaners is that unless you do encounter a problem, for most it's best to leave it alone. Not all leftover remnants are harmful, or have any impact.

Although sometimes, remnants can cause issues so some have a legitimate need to fix the registry - generally speaking though, most do not.
