    Gimp 2.8 now available

EDIT: Please use Athene's posted link below in post #2 to download Gimp 2.8.

The new Gimp 2.8 is now available, be sure and check out the release notes as this is a major release and there have been significant improvements over the previous Gimp.

The stable and official GIMP 2.8 installer for Windows is at sourceforge and the GIMP website has now been updated with the link:
    http://gimp-win.sourceforge.net/stable.html

It can be installed over the previous version of GIMP and it will remove said previous version, but note that it will NOT save or transfer brushes, patterns, plugins etc. which were installed separately by the user, so you may want to back up the above.

To activate the eagerly awaited single-window mode, go to "Windows" and select "Single-Window Mode."

Here's a picture of the GIMP splash screen:

Anyone getting an error "twain.exe blah blah"? I had to remove that plugin.

No - no problems with twain.exe over here, GIMP 2.8 installer and portable versions are working fine. However, you may want to drop a line about this issue to the GIMP people:
    GIMP - Bugs

I think twain is related to scanners/scanning devices.

One issue I had was speed-related; I discovered that pulling handles from path nodes was taking ages (the display was lagging behind the actions) and that my computer was starting to howl because GIMP was hogging the computer resources; as per the advice in a GIMP forum (I unfortunately don't remember where exactly), I set the option "Mode of operation" to "No colour management" (under "Colour management" in "Preferences"). That solved the problem.

Version 2.8 includes the long awaited single-window mode, which gives it more of a Photoshop interface look.

This is mostly do to the non-native GUI toolkit they use, GTK I think. I've gotten use to it, but yeah ... it could be better if it was native looking.

GTK+ (Gimp Toolkit) is a spin off from the Gimp project. http://www.gtk.org/

It is also used by the Inkscape vector drawing program.

Greetings, do you need a specific file downloader to download Gimp from the link posted above. I can't download the file from sourceforge. The download just hangs. I've tried IE9, Firefox, Opera. What tool is needed to download from that website?
