Thanks Mr. GRiM. Got it working now. Still can't make it the default, but can't have everything.

Gary

Edit:Wow the 64 bit is sooooo fast to open.

Edit2:Now I get the 'open file-security warning' box. I unchecked always ask, but it doesn't stick. Tried to set compatibility, but that is all greyed out. Also took ownership and full rights. No go. Guess MS is trying to force us to stop using WM. Will try the 32 bit as that never had that prob.

Your welcome Gary, happy to here that it's nice and quick for you, question though did it ask you the first time you opened it if you wanted it to be set as default, because it did when I tried it.

Yes I did, but didn't work for me. Tried going to assoc. prog. and select it and it won't let me. Same as in other builds.

Tried 32 bit and it has the open file security warning also.

Just had a power outage so I shut down and rebooted when it came back on and now the security window seems to be gone. Just needed a reboot to stick I guess. Still can't set as default though.

I found I couldn't set it as default until I actually had another mail program installed. Same with the default news handler. That wouldn't stick even after I had setup WLM as an alternative. I think Microsoft never meant WM to be active in Windows 7 so it's no wonder really.

I have just installed with your zip dowload Mr Grim, thanks for that. Gary what i did is this

1. Downloaded the zip files
2. Extracted
3. Opened the x64 folder of mail in Programs
4. Click on Windows Mail then take ownership
5. Opened the Windows Mail folder selected all and deleted all
6. Then I took ownership fo the extracted windows mail folder
7. Opened it and selected all files in the folder - copy all
8. Pasted it all to the Programs Windows Mail folder
9. Rebooted
10. Went into the Program Windows Mail folder and clicked on Winmail application folder and voila. Asked for default etc. etc.
11. Sent shortcut to desktop and dragged to my task bar

Thanks to everybody else too.

I renamed and added the new folder. It's working except for being the default.

Hi Ex_Brit,

I'll try downloading another prog. and see if that works. I'm sure MS doesn't mean for it to be active, but why include all the files and folders?

Exactly....I sent MSFT some rather sharply worded feedback on the subject.
