I purchased it from Tiger Direct right after Win 7 came out. It does have on the outside of the box - "Upgrade - designed for Windows Vista."

Guess what I want to do won't work, huh? - jb

PS - It does say that if installing to XP, you must backup your files and settings, do a clean install and reinstall files and settings. Since part of the problems I now have with the present Win 7 is that none of the "normal" things like backup, uninstall, etc, is not working this might be a problem as well. - jb

You can do a clean install with the Upgrade disk you have look at this tutorial Clean Install with a Upgrade Windows 7 Version

Try Repair Install with the latest installer linked along with tool to burn to DVD or write to flash stick in Steps 1 and 2 of Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7.

You can install to another HD with all others unplugged, then after install plug back in the current HD to access it's files in explorer.

If there is no OS on the HD you install upon then wait until after install to do the quick workaround in the Upgrade tutorial Jerry linked just above this post, to activate Upgrade version on a cleaned or wiped HD.

    However programs must be reinstalled.

Greg and Jerry - if I underswtand it, I must reinstall all 70+ programs I have on this computer if I do a clean install to a new drive.

Is there any other way that might solve the problem? I see an ad here about RegCure - would that do it? - jb

    Yes

Do not use RegCure unless Greg says so, but I am pretty sure Greg will say no.

If you're not ready to do a Clean Reinstall then try the Repair Install. It sometimes solves these problems since it reinstalls the OS and only allows the keys to remain for active programs.

I'd never use a Reg Cleaner except CCleaner Disk and Registry cleaner which is beyond reproach. The others are mostly sales operations.

If you want to continue trying manually to remove ATT, set a System Restore Point - Create and search the Registry for remnants: type regedit in Start Search box, rightclick to Run as Admin. Expand HKEY_Current_User and HKEY-Local-Machine to open the Software Keys, Delete all ATT. Then in Edit tab, click Find, type ATT in, click Find to Delete any keys found, Keep clicking Find Next until complete.

In C:Program Files, delete any ATT folders, then in Control Panel>Folder Options>View unhide System and Hidden Files, go to C:Program data to delete any ATT. Then run CCleaner Disk and Registry cleaners, reboot. Can you reinstall ATT?

Tks, Guys - I will get back on this tomorrow as try what you have given me.

I have Ccleaner but had never used the registry cleaner part of it - just ran it and it comes up with about 80 problems. A lot of Invalid Default Icons of Program files\common files\MS shared\web folders\pkmres.dll, a bunch of MS silverlight and a bunch of the ATT files. Should I go ahead and fix these items?

When I follow the repair install, I can't go up on the internet to do an update so the program keeps coming up with the can't install because there is a later version of the program already on the computer - or something like that.

Again, tks - will get back to this tomorrow. - jb

Did you try the Repair Install with the latest installer as I suggested.

In cases like this you must be thorough, constantly combing the thread to make sure you have done every single step without fail. If you have more questions, just ask them back.

Greg, I had for the 4th time gone through the steps you gave me for the repair and with the same result.

When I get to step 6 I can not check for updates because I can't get to the internet on that computer.

So when I get to step 9 the compatibility report says - "Your current version of Windows is more recent than the version you are trying to upgrade to. Windows cannot complete the upgrade."

You mentioned running Ccleaner which I have on that computer - ran the Registry Cleaner and it comes up with over 80 problems. A lot of ''Invalid Default Icons of Program files\common files\MS shared\web folders\pkmres.dll, a bunch of MS silverlight and a bunch of the ATT files. The Revo program deleted all of the ATT files but a lot of them remaim in the registry. Should I go ahead and fix these items? -jb

Because my gut feeling says that we will need to still go one more step after that, then:

Download Autoruns. Do NOT run this program yet. Misuse of this program will result in a 100% fresh install which I know that you would like to avoid.

    Autoruns for Windows
