When finished you can troubleshoot old disk. Disconnect new disk and reboot from old disk
  1. When the error: Windows could not finish configuring the system. To attempt to resume configuration, restart the computer. Press SHIFT – F10. Don’t press OK.
  2. At this point you can do basicly anything
  3. My advice is to start services.msc and start all of the services which are marked: Automatic
  4. NET USER yourusername /active:yes
  5. Start explorer.exe
  6. You can now Switch the user
  7. Log in with the admin user and start the hotfix
  8. reboot
hotfix: A Windows 7 or a Windows Server 2008 R2 image deployment process stops when you try to deploy the image on another computer (tip: Download it from a good working win7 and put it on G:\ for example [named C:\ in old win7])

Sounds good, I'll let you know how all that goes tomorrow.

I think even if I do get it working, I'll go ahead with a fresh install, there is a lot I need to fix. For example I have an annoying 3rd party lock screen thing I cant remove, my user is the default admin which is a huge security risk, I just couldn't be bothered switching it, and I have changed hardware a lot so that install has so many redundant drivers, utilities, etc. First though ill copy over my major settings and such.

It went in standby mode because of inactivity? Disable standby mode ... at least temporary

So ready to just scrap it all...reformat the drive and start new.

Everything finished copying, I now have my backups.

Following this, I began troubleshooting the drive. I first tried the hotfix, but upon entering the admin account, I was unable to get to the hotfix. The hotfix was saved on a disk, a flash drive and I put it on the desktop for the user, but it didnt show up on the desktop and when I try to open any folder, e.g. my computer, my documents, even a random one, I get the error "The server process could not be started because the configured identity is incorrect. Check the username and password."

I tried the first method you suggested which involved changing the registry, that seemed to work and it boots, but its like its in some kind of safemode or something. Here I was back here I was at the previous state, stuck on this buggy kind of desktop and unable to start anything.

Not sure what to do now.

Did you do what's posted in #62 first?

but if you now boot your system it boots fine without errors? You are in "some kind of safe mode". Please tell me why you call it safe?? what is different?

I did #62 first yes, but like I say I get the permissions error. I call it "safe" because:
-Severely reduced resolution
-Only shortcuts from installations are shown on desktop, no files or anything
-Basic windows theme, the hideous grey one
-Programs such as rainmeter are running in default settings, not user settings

Many of these things are also seen in safemode.

you did sysprep. and the msoobe fase didn't complete! not a prblome now. First try to install hotfix. The strange error in explorer (server process not starting) is most likely easy to fix

start->run->regedit (and press enter) does that work? If so browse to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\AppID\{CDCBCFCA-3CDC-436f-A4E2-0E02075250C2}

Click on it. What is on the right pane now? Are these the values?

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\AppID\{CDCBCFCA-3CDC-436f-A4E2-0E02075250C2}]
@="Elevated-Unelevated Explorer Factory"
"RunAs"="Interactive User"
"AppIDFlags"=dword:00000001

"RunAs" value should be: Interactive User
What was the value? Please update it to that value. And reboot. Now explorer should work
