Scottjm77, Did you try to uninstall avast from the programs and features in control panel?
I am not familiar with Avast but many of the AV vendors have an uninstall option.

You can find the ASW Clear removal tool on the Avast! site and run it to remove the left in stuff so your Norton doesn't think the Avast! is still there. ;)

I would use Avast before Norton.
Search for and read posts on this forum, and look in the "Crashes and Debugging" sub-forum.
You may well have fewer problems with Avast (or MSE), and a more stable system with Avast or MSE.

It's your choice...

as a tech for 23 years. with a 100% fix rating. Nortons IS the best hands down.
To unistall Avast go to safe mode.
If you have the folder still there you sh old see in side of it a SETUP exe. OR wise unistall exe.
If so .. go to SAFE MODE then add remove. The issue your having is becasue the program can NOT be reomoved while running. In regular mode it has been running. Not to mention FREE antivirus software is always a pain to get rid of. Producing false positives and fake alersts. Even Avast does this. This is why it is hard to remove as it is alwas communicating.
And yes alot of haters for nortons as in the 908's early 2000 era Nortons on friday nights would kik in and LAG the hell out of a system. Doesnt happen anymore hanst for a few years now. Norotns has the Largest data base for antiviral fixes and the For telling in virus activity. Just a tech for a long time and I found many antivirus that were just as much as a threat as the things it is suppose to protect you form, mainly Uninstalling one of the FREE versions.

Try it all in safe mode. Downloading a Uninstaller is honestly not the answer, as 3rd party programs are installed as you try to install IT to get rid of something .. giving you something else to worry about. Its kinda like in stalling a Driver finder to fix a driver issue. IF you have some how Delted avast folder, you will need to manually clear your registry. ( Which can be done in safe mode aswell) but again a registry cleaner is going to install "other" as it does its job. I highly recommend seeing your Tech. No matter hw "good with coputers" you may be or your frined, see your educated licnsed A+ ASCII certified tech. he can fix it without formatting.

Norton is the best...if you compare is strictly to Mcafee. Norton leaves a lot to be desired in terms of performance. Norton is also one of the worst applications in the history of computers to uninstall.

The uninstallers are made by the companies themselves to remove their products. There's no harm in using them, and they are often the only way to remove AV software. Norton (and Symantec) have had several versions and revisions available to remove their bloated products.

Genericly true statement .But I beleive your bias towards nortons is based on much older builds as I stated above.
But we live i n a free north America . But on several occasions I remove such said software in safe mode and clean
The registry manually. Takes time but cleaned without dumping more software into it. And nortons can be removed within itself without going to download the uninstaller. A differant perspective is not to be feared if the original poster wants help just email

My opinions are based on research and actual experience. As IT Director, my job is to evaluate products and choose the ones best suited for my company's needs and budget. Norton's products had a higher memory usage and lower detection rate than other products on the market. They have improved, but they are far from the best. They fell far from the top of the mountain, and while they are trying to climb back up, they have a long way to go. If you read any of the usual comparison AV websites, you'll see where Norton really ranks.
