Wonder if trying to install it in Safe Mode would work.

Been having this problem now with other programs and tried to restore system. Tried a before ABBYY date and this is the error message I got:

I have a feeling that I screwed up my OS by having CCleaner fix registry???

CCleaner is the only reg cleaner app I "trust". I always backup the registry first and then manually delete the registry entries it identifies as deletable. I don't recall a time where I didn't end up deleting every entry it identified anyway; it doesn't seem to ever identify something that shouldn't be deleted.

I don't think I've ever had an issue with System Restore not working with w7, but you might want to try that in Safe Mode (use to need to do that quite a bit with XP).

If that doesn't work you might need to test your RAM and/or the hard drive itself, but first try this:

SFC /SCANNOW Command - System File Checker

Finally got my "administrative" problems solved. Recently I have had several programs that wouldn't install because of permission problems. I'm not good at permissions, but started fooling around and wound up giving full permissions to major folders like (program data. program files, program files (x86)) and i also took ownership of several files/folders. Anyway, this all was rather haphazard and I unfortunately can't pass on just exactly what I did other than what I have already said. But, then I might add when I previously removed UAC, it didn't help install the problem programs.

Thank you for reporting back. I'm assuming that the problem was a permission problem only. Everything else was okay.
If your happy please mark this thread Solved.

Sounds like somewhere along the line permissions got mucked with. Any idea how it may have happened?

Did you compare the permissions/ownership for these folders/files against the computer that had no issues?

I know this is an old thread but I had the same problem a couple of days ago and finally found an answer - provided by Abbyy-Europe Support. In case it helps anyone else, what you need to do is:

    1. Remove FineReader via control panel. (If you can't do that, delete the "C:\Program Files (x86)\ABBYY FineReader 9.0 Sprint" folder and run CC Ceaner to remove the Windows registry entries.

    2. Delete the folder "ABBYY" from ProgramData ("C:\ProgramData\ABBYY\FineReaderSprint\9.00\")

    3. Reinstall Finereader.
