- Notepad++ <-- Good alternative to Windows' built-in notepad; can be used as a scripting language tool
- Adobe Reader <-- View / read .pdf files
- Autodesk Sketchbook Pro <-- Artistic purposes / drawing / art
- 7zip <-- Free tool to compressing file(s) into a single package (can be password-protected) / extracting files off its package
- WinRAR <-- Same as 7zip, only capable of extracting some files 7zip can't

Everything here is free except for Autodesk Sketchbook Pro and WinRAR.
Got them all apart from Autodesk

personally i would avoid installing third party codecs, i used to but i discovered splash player, the only file type it cant play is flv, for that i use vlc, agian no codecs needed.

free version of splash player...

I backup all my data to my external hard drive which I keep in a secure location
I was thinking more in terms of attempting to get the laptop itself back if it is stolen.

Score makes no difference, Update what is needed and then you have 100%
